Wormcastle wins exciting ARCA Trucks feature at Kentucky.
Joe Wormcastle of Ft. Wayne, IN won the opening race for the 2002 ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck series at Kentucky Speedway. Despite the single grove on the narrow ¼-mile oval short track in the Kentucky infield, Wormcastle advanced from the 14th starting spot for the victory in the 50-lap feature race.
At the wave of the green flag, second-starting Paul Haun of Canton, MI took the lead from pole-sitter Steve Christman and was able to keep that lead through the early stages of the race. Three caution periods in the race's first half kept the trucks bunched up and allowed Wormcastle to work his way up the order with a good restart each time.
Two red flag periods halted the action at mid-race, the first a lengthy stoppage on lap 29 to clean up an oil spill that covered the racing line around the whole course, the second just a lap later when the lapped car of outside pole-sitter Brett Oakley spun in front of the most of the field, causing a full track blockage. The restart was delayed when the trucks of John Kasmierski and Chad Guinn became entangled, requiring two wreckers to unhook them. Kasmierski's truck and that of fifth-running Bill Withers were too damaged to continue. Guinn, however, put on a great charge after that restart, eventually finishing in 3rd position. Especially impressive was his move from 6th in the final two laps.
On the restart from the second red flag, Darren Jones, whose truck was one lap down due to a lap two spin, got the jump on the lead truck of Haun, and Christman and Wormcastle followed him through to take the first and second positions. One lap later, Wormcastle, passed Christman for the lead entering turn one. Christman's transmission gave out on lap 43 to end his day, which promoted Haun back to second place.
Lewis wires the field in Kentucky for the USAC Midget feature
The USAC National Midget series was also on the card at Kentucky Speedway. Michael Lewis of Noblesville, IN won the pole position and led every lap of the 50-lap feature race, with Phoenix, AZ's J.J.Yeley following at close quarters for the entire race. Outside front row starter Ron Gregory, also of Noblesville, fell into third at the race start and shadowed the two leaders for the entire race. Gregory made a clean pass of Yeley on lap 40, but a spin by A.J. Fike on that lap negated that pass. The only change of significance in the order of the top five cars was when the 4th-running midget of Semi winner (and fastest qualifier) Teddy Beach slipped wide with six laps remaining, allowing Dave Steele, Dave Darland, and Bobby East to slip through and finish ahead of him. The heat races were won by Fike, Chris Hettinger, Chris Gabehart, and Travis Wellpott.
