FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KOOL & TOYOTA JOIN AS CO-TITLE SPONSORS OF THE KOOL/TOYOTA ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP Player's Challenge To Be Run In Canada
HIGHLAND PARK, ILL. (October 29) - - The long-term future of the Atlantic Championship was strengthened today when officials of Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc., Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation's KOOL brand, and Vicki O'Connor, president of Pro-Motion Agency Ltd., the company which administers the Atlantic series, jointly announced a new three year, co-title sponsorship agreement which will see North America's premier and longest running open-wheel racing development series become the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship, commencing in 1997.
In addition to series co-title sponsorship, KOOL will also present a variety of special awards, and increased driver incentive and bonus award programs.
"The Atlantic Championship is a dynamic and important open-wheel development series," said KOOL Sports Sponsorship Manager Bert Kremer Jr. "When the opportunity for KOOL to become involved in the series with Toyota arose, it just made eminent sense given KOOL's goals of providing opportunities for emerging drivers."
Long time series sponsor Player's will continue its association with
the Atlantic championship. Beginning in 1997, the Player's Challenge
will recognize the efforts of the driver who earns the most points in
the series' Canadian Atlantic events, thus creating a Canadian title
within the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship.
The 1997 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship winner will once again be awarded an opportunity to participate in a Toyota sponsored Indy Car test session, while the champion of the U.S. Formula Ford 2000 National Championship will be presented with a series administered test in an Atlantic car.
"I am extremely pleased to welcome KOOL aboard the Atlantic championship series," said O'Connor. "Their support, coupled with that of long time series sponsors, Toyota and Player's, guarantees the continued success of Atlantic for many years to come. " 1997 will celebrate the 24th anniversary season of Atlantic racing in North America, with Toyota Motor Sales, USA, entering its ninth consecutive season as a primary series sponsor.
The KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship is the longest running and richest open-wheel development series in North America, offering more than $1.25 million in total prize money. The 1997 Atlantic schedule includes eight races in the United States and four in Canada, on a variety of oval tracks, road courses and street circuits.
