IMSA GTS-2 AND WSC REGULARS ANNOUNCE ATLANTIC PLANS FOR'96
IMSA GTS-2 standout Bill Auberlen, of Redondo Beach, Calif , and Tim Hubman, of Del Mar, Calif, have announced plans to drive with BDJS/Ralt American in the 1996 Player's Ltd./Toyota Atlantic Champioinship. Earlier this month, the MOMO Corse Ferrari team hired the pair to campaign the complete 1996 IMSA World Sports Car schedule and MOMO will provide sponsorship for the Atlantic team. Both drivers will be pilot Ralt RT-41 cars.
Auberlen, who finished second place in the 1995 IMSA GTS-2 championship, won pole positions and claimed five victories on the '95 GTS-2 circuit. He made his Atlantic and open-wheel racing debut at Miami last year where he finished an impressive second-place (0.437-seconds behind race winner Patrick Carpentier, of Joliette, Quebec) and scored the fastest race lap. Hubman, a relative newcomer to motorsports following colorful careers in college hockey and baseball, contested the IMSA GTS-2 class and WSC in 1995.
For Auberlen, the dual program effort in 1996 is a dream come true after 10 years of consistent and impressive professional competition.
"I was looking for something special in 1996 and I think I found it," Auberlen related. "I had a few offers and I was trying decide what to do when I was suddenly approached by two of the absolute best team in modem auto racing. To me, this is a dream come true. We'll be testing the Atlantic car several times in January and right up to the day before we're fitted for the WSC car and the 24 Hours of Daytona."
Learjet transportation has been arranged for both drivers to avoid conflicting race dates in July when the Player's Ltd./Toyota Atlantic Championship runs on Saturday, July 13, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and the WSC cars compete at Sears Point (Calif.) the next day.
"All of our travel plans have already been set," Auberlen said. "we’ll race in the Atlantic series on Saturday in Toronto and then fly that night to Sears Point for the WSC race the next day."
BDJS/Ralt American team manager Dave McMillian is looking forward to another banner year despite the departure of last year's lead driver and 1995 Atlantic series runner-up David Empringham..
"We're very much looking forward to working with Bill and Tim," McMillian said. "We ran them for a couple of days in November and I was impressed with Bill's run at Miami last year. I also watched Bill at Phoenix and he was impressive on the oval. We love the ovals and hopefully we'll make him even quicker and get Tim some wins, as well. Our eventual goal is to move to IndyCar."
