AREA SCHOOLS USE TOYOTA GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH AS LEARNING TOOL
LONG BEACH, Calif. (March 30, 2006) -- It's safe to say that the vast majority of people attending the 32nd Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach are there simply to enjoy the sun and fun of Southern California's Ultimate Speed Festival.
However, a certain segment of the expected 170,000 people will be there April 7-9 for a more important reason: to learn.
More than 200 Southern California students and teachers will spend a day exploring the activities around the 1.97-mile street circuit as guests of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach (GPALB) to fulfill a variety of classroom assignments.
Schools and classes scheduled to attend race weekend include:
* A Facility Planning and Personnel Management Class from Cal State Long Beach, part of the school's Masters in Sports Management program,
* Students in Cal State Long Beach's Kinesiology Department,
* A social studies class from Lowell Elementary School in Long Beach,
* Students from 15 area colleges who are members of the Society of Automotive Engineers,
* Auto Shop classes from Bellflower High School and Tri-City Christian School in Vista, and
* A photography class that is part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Youth-At-Risk Program.
"The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach has always been an integral part of the Southern California Community and, as such, it's our responsibility to give something back to that community," said Jim Michaelian, CEO of the GPALB.
"It is a 'win-win' situation for all concerned. Hopefully, we can contribute to their continuing education and, eventually, we'll see these students back here many times in the future simply enjoying themselves as race fans."
A limited number of school class race visitations, primarily focusing on Long Beach schools, are available each year from the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. Requests must be made in writing at least 30 days prior to race weekend.
Tickets for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, featuring six racing events including the opening round of the 2006 Champ Car World Series, can be purchased from the Grand Prix ticket office by calling the toll-free ticket hotline at (888) 82-SPEED. A handy ticket brochure - which includes circuit map, grandstand and parking locations, ticket prices and order form - can be obtained by calling the ticket hotline. Tickets are also available online at longbeachgp.com or ticketmaster.com.
Ticket prices range from $35 for Friday/Saturday general admission up to $115 for a three-day ticket that includes Saturday and Sunday reserved seats in upper levels of the grandstands. Pre-paid parking packages are also available when ordering through the Grand Prix Ticket Office. Handicapped seating, Bosch Champ Car Garage passes, super photo tickets and a variety of hospitality club packages are also available.
