Jeff Burton took his second win of the season in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway over the 4th of July weekend. The Skip Barber grad notched career win number 13 by hanging tough in the waning laps to hold off the charge of a pack breathing down his neck. Credit also goes to his crew chief for making the right call on tire strategy at the right time. Taking on only two rather than the customary four tires during a caution period with less than 50 laps remaining gave Burton the track position he needed. From there fair but aggressive blocking kept the others at bay until he swept passed the checkered flag.
Brother Ward Burton in seventh place and Jeff Gordon in tenth place rounded out the Top-10 for Skip Barber alumni. Fellow alumnus Bobby Labonte continues to retain the points lead for the Winston Cup title.
Antonio Pizzonia continues to steam-roll the opposition in the British Formula 3 Series. The young Brazilian who is a veteran of the Skip Barber Race Series garnered yet another victory along with a third place for rounds eight and nine of the series, taking place this time at Donington Park in Derbyshire, England. Pizzonia is now well on his way to the British F3 crown as he now stands 45 points to the good in the overall standings.
1994 Barber Pro Series champion Kenny Brack secured his best finish to date since joining the CART FedEx Series this year. After racing strictly on ovals for the past few seasons, Brack showed that he has not lost his road racing ways by placing second at the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland. He’s now firmly entrenched himself as the favorite to become the next CART FedEx Rookie of the Year. Four of the Top-10 in Cleveland were Skip Barber trained drivers. Brack among them, fourth place was secured by Michael Andretti, followed by Juan Montoya in sixth place and Bryan Herta, taking on the role of ‘super sub’ this year finished ninth while standing in for the injured Tony Kanaan.
In the Toyota Atlantic Race at Cleveland, Barber Dodge veterans Rocky Moran Jr. and William Langhorne scored fourth and fifth place finishes respectively. Another Barber Dodge veteran, Alex Gurney had captured the pole for the race but was only to complete 22-laps when he was side-lined by mechanical woes.
