ELKHART LAKE, Wisc., (July 9, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Paul Tracy was ninth and his teammate Dario Franchitti 14th in provisional qualifying for this Sunday's Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America. (Live on ABC-TV at 1:00 p.m. ET)

Last year's pole winner, Michael Andretti had the fastest car on the 4.048-mile road course today. His time was 1:41.354 seconds for an average speed of 143.781 mph. Juan Montoya, the points leader and the winner of the last race in Cleveland, was second fastest with a time of 1:41.642 (143.374 mph). Patrick Carpentier was third quick with a lap of 1:41.869 (143.054 mph) before he crashed, rolling his car over several times and into a tire barrier. Carpentier walked away from the wreck unhurt.

Carpentier's accident in Turn 1 ended the first session in which Tracy and Franchitti were qualifying. Franchitti's session was cut even shorter when he spun, causing a red flag to which he had to serve an eight-minute penalty. His quick lap was 1:42.597 (142.039 mph). Tracy, meanwhile, posted a strong lap-time of 1:42.344 (142.390 mph). Tomorrow's schedule has the 26-car field back on track for final practice at 9:00 a.m. Central Time, with qualifying beginning at 12:45 p.m. CT.

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (9th with a lap-time of 1:42.344 / 142.390 mph)

"We achieved what we wanted today and that was to stay in the fast group for tomorrow's final qualifying session. We don't feel that we have the Team KOOL Green car completely dialed in yet. The track conditions have changed since we tested here in June (June 1-2). But, I'm really happy that we were able to save a set of tires and now we've got some fresh Firestones for the start of the race. We'll keep working on the setup tomorrow and hopefully hit our goal of making it into the top-five on the grid."

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (14th with a lap-time of 1:42.597 / 142.039 mph)

"My session was very brief. It felt like we just got the Team KOOL Green car warmed up and then I spun. I thought I could keep it running, but I stalled it on the grass. We didn't hit the setup on the head in the first run. Then we were on used tires and we were quicker. I feel quietly confident at the moment. There's a couple of things we still need to do with the car. The good news is that the track grip is getting better all the time and I served my eight-minute penalty for causing a red today, so that means we have the entire session tomorrow. So, that makes me happy because we'll have a good go for the pole.

KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship - PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING

Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney was eighth in provisional qualifying for the 17-lap race on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. CT. Gurney was quicker with each lap, posting his best time (2:07.558 seconds / 114.24 mph) towards the end of the session.

Andrew Bordin, meanwhile, holds the provisional pole after clocking a lap of 2:05.205 (116.39 mph) Anthony Lazarro was second fastest with a time of 2:05.466 (116.14 mph), while Buddy Rice was third with a lap of 2:06.504 (115.19 mph).

ALEX GURNEY, #27 Team KOOL Green Toyota/Swift: (8th with a lap-time of 2:07.558 / 114.245 mph)

"We weren't sure what the track conditions would be like, but it was pretty rough this morning. It was not a lot of fun to drive because I had a lot of snap oversteer. We made some changes for this afternoon's qualifying and the Team KOOL Green car was a lot better on course. The Champ Cars put down more rubber, which certainly helped with the grip. My times were coming down in big chunks there at the end. A couple of more laps and I think that we would have been even better. It's a little different than Barber Dodge cars that I raced here last year. In the fast corners, you can carry a lot more speed in the Atlantic cars. I was having fun out there."
