VANCOUVER, B.C., (Sept. 3, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti sits on the provisional pole following the first day of qualifying for the 90-lap Molson Indy Vancouver. Franchitti powered around the 1.781-mile street circuit in 1:01.343 seconds, averaging 104.520 mph.

Roberto Moreno, meanwhile, moved into second position when Paul Tracy's #26 KOOL Honda-Reynard failed the two-inch rule in CART's post-qualifying technical inspection. Tracy's time of 1:01.643 seconds (104.012 mph) was thrown out, dropping him to 27th after the first day of qualifying. Moreno' s trip around the 11-turn circuit took 1:01.652 seconds (103.997 mph), while Greg Moore in third posted a time of 1:01.716 seconds (103.889 mph).

Tomorrow's schedule has the 26-car field back on track for final practice at 9:00 a.m. PT, with qualifying beginning at 12:45 p.m. Sunday's race will be broadcast live on ABC-TV at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (1st with a lap-time of 1:01.343 seconds / 104.520 mph)

"There's a lot of changes since last year. The changes to the track have us looking for a different set-up. We're not struggling with the set-up, but we 're still certainly trying to improve it all the time. Paul would have been second, so obviously Team KOOL Green has both cars working really well. Now, it's up to us to get out there and drive them. I was pretty concerned about just running around because I think the track will be quicker tomorrow. I didn't want to use up my tires too much, so I could keep some in reserve for the race.

"I love racing in Canada. Toronto and Vancouver are such great cities and I usually do well here because I'm in happy surroundings."

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD/FIRESTONE: (27th ; No time / No speed)

"I don't know what to say, obviously I'm disappointed and my guys will be as well. I haven't had a chance to see them yet. As long as the weather is good tomorrow, I'm confident that everything will go well because we had a good car today. It's going to make our job pretty tough, though. It's a disadvantage to be in the first group because the track will be faster in the second group. We'll just have to see what we can do.

"We'll need to improve the grip level a little with the car. The track is pretty good and I like the changes from last year."

BARRY GREEN ON THE PENALTY ASSESSED TO PAUL TRACY:

"Prior to qualifying, the car passed two technical inspections. So, we're certainly confused as to what has happened since then. In conjunction with CART, we have re-checked the measurement and it was certainly illegal. What we have to do now is focus on tomorrow. The track will be even faster tomorrow and we know Paul is happy with his setup. The other [spare] car will be just as fast. So, I think you'll see us right back in the thick of things tomorrow."

KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship - PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING

Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney was 12th in provisional qualifying today in preparation for Sunday's 38-lap KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship race. Gurney sped to a time of 1:14.225 seconds (85.381 mph) around the 1.781-mile street circuit in Vancouver.

Gurney remains in pursuit of Kenny Wilden, who holds the provisional pole with a time of 1:11.586 seconds (89.565 mph). William Langhorne and Alexandre Tagliani are Wilden's closest rivals at the moment. Langhorne was second quick with a time of 1:11.763 seconds (89.344 mph), while Tagliani was next with a time of 1:11.810 (89.285 mph).

Tomorrow's final 30-minute qualifying session will begin at 11:55 a.m. Pacific Time.

ALEXGURNEY, #27 Team KOOL Green Toyota/Swift: (12th with a lap-time of 1:14.225 seconds / 85.381 mph)

"I had to serve an eight-minute penalty for causing a red flag at the last race (Mid-Ohio). Between the penalty and the red flags [stopping today's qualifying session], we didn't get a lot of laps in qualifying. I think we improved the KOOL car from this morning's practice, but it's hard to tell because we ran so few laps this afternoon (six laps). I think we'll be okay tomorrow if we can get full sessions. We've just got a few problems to work on. the car is a little nervous on the entry and we're trying to get off the corners a little better. Other than that, I think we're in good shape. This may be a new track for me, but I think I've got it figured out."
