ARCIERO-WELLS RACING AND TOYOTA OFFER INDY CAR TEST TO 1997 KOOL/TOYOTA ATLANTIC CHAMPION

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (Aug. 9) - - For the second consecutive year, the winner for the KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship will be awarded an opportunity to participate in an Indy car test session with Arciero-Wells Racing. The announcement was made by Arciero-Wells Racing and Pro-Motion Agency, Ltd., the company which administers the Atlantic series. Testing will be held at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, outside of Bakersfield, Calif., on Tuesday, Sept. 16, following the KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship finale at Laguna Seca Raceway, in Monterey, Calif., on Sept. 6. "Having worked with Toyota for over 16 years, I’ve always admired its driver-development program now known as the KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship," said Cal Wells III, co-owner of Arciero-Wells Racing. "With a heritage which has produced tremendous Formula One and CART Indy car champions, certainly Toyota Atlantic has proven it is the stepping stone in the United States for young aspiring single-seat athletes. PPI is proud not only to be a participant, but to provide a view to the future towards CART Indy car for the individual who has proven himself to be the best to all newcomers again in 1997." The melding of Toyota, veteran Indy Car team owner Frank Arciero, and prominent motorsports businessman Cal Wells III into Arciero-Wells Racing (AWR) in 1995 represented one of the most powerful unions in modern motorsports. AWR fields Toyota-powered Reynard Indy Car driven by Max Papis and Hiro Matsushita in the PPG/CART World Series. "The opportunity for the KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic champion to test in the Arciero-Wells Racing Indy car is a tremendous opportunity as evidenced by 1996 champion Patrick Carpentier’s Indy car success following his test with AWR last year," said Vicki O’Connor, president of Pro-Motion Agency, Ltd., the company which administers the Atlantic series. "Atlantic is fortunate to have the support of Toyota and AWR in composing this program for each Atlantic series champion." The KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship is the longest running and richest open-wheel development series in North America, offering more than $1.38 million in total prize money. "Toyota is very pleased to be awarding this test to the 1997 KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic champion," said Toyota National Motorsports Manager Les Unger. "Toyota views the Atlantic championship as one of the most competitive series in North America and the best training ground for future Indy car stars." Toyota Motor Sales, USA, is in its ninth consecutive season as a primary series sponsor while KOOL is in its first year as co-title sponsor.
