Gearbox gremlins strike at Cleveland

Britain's Ryan Lewis was unable to finish the Champ Car Atlantic race at Cleveland yesterday when his gearbox gave out at three-quarter distance.

During the qualifying sessions he was running well at the front but when he went for a new tyre run he struggled to pick up grip so qualified towards the back of the top ten in ninth position. When the lights went out on Sunday Ryan quickly settled into his race and was up to eigth by lap two. As the race progressed the Brit started to struggle due to running too much wing, the end result being a spin on lap 25 which allowed (Ronnie) Bremer and (James) Hinchcliffe to get past him. His race ended on lap 33 with a spin and gearbox gremlins.

"At the start we were looking pretty strong," said Ryan. "I managed to get past (Robert) Wickens in the hairpin, but I think we were struggling with our straight line speed today, considering everyone could catch me at the hairpin and pass right by me. You live and you learn and unfortunately I lost touch with the starting grid. We lost out to (Ronnie) Bremer and then (David) Garza. Then in the end Garza braked earlier than he had before which caused me to spin and then our gearbox broke and that was the end of our day."

"Ryan's pace was good relative to the field," commented Team Principal, Derrick Walker. "The car appeared to be a little too loose for his liking around here and that makes a car tough to drive. Unfortunately he didn't get to finish the race and we just need to put it all together for the whole race distance and I think there are some good finishes there for him in the future."

Cleveland marks the start of three weekends of back-to-back racing for the Champ Car Atlantic runners. Next weekend Ryan will be in St. Jovite, Canada, before heading to Toronto the following weekend.
