Bittersweet Day For Walker Racing in Cleveland
Walker Racing survived the infamous turn one madness today as the team competed in the Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by LaSalle Bank today.
As the green flag dropped both of the Walker Racing drivers', Swiss rookie Simona De Silvestro (#5 Miauton), and Brit, Ryan Lewis (#15 NCPI Solutions/InSport) started eighth and ninth today, but dropped back a couple of spots to make it safely through turn one.
De Silvestro ran a strong race as she continued to battle with balance and understeer, but still managed to keep her green and gold chassis firmly on the Burke Lakefront Airport circuit. The Swiss Miss brought home her best result this season securing eleventh place.
Lewis, on the other hand, had a tougher day. The young Brit started strong, but as the race progressed he found it more difficult to stay on track, running off on the 23rd lap and then spinning off with eight minutes left to go, then suffered from gearbox malfunction.
Walker Racing heads back to Indianapolis to fine tune the Swift 016a. cars and then off to St. Jovite, Quebec Canada, as they compete in round seven of the Cooper Tires Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Series Presented by Mazda next Sunday, June 29, 2007. What they had to say:
Ryan Lewis: "On the start we were looking pretty strong and I managed to get past Wickens in the hairpin, but I think we were struggling with our straight line speed today, considering everyone could catch me at the hairpin and pass right by me. You live and you learn and unfortunately I lost touch with the starting grid. The car just kept getting better and better, similar car to what we had in practice. We lost out to Bremer and then Garza. Then in the end Garza broke earlier than he had before which caused me to spin and then our gearbox broke and that was the end of our day."
Simona De Silvestro: "It was good race for us. I was well off the grid, but I had a problem with second gear when I went too soon and it slowed me down. Then in the first corner someone hit me and I lost two positions. Overall the car was great and the race went well. It's starting to click now and we are starting to put the pieces together. We are headed in the right direction. I'm ready for the next race."
Derrick Walker: "Simona had a bit of a setback in the start, with a slow start, but nevertheless she got the car up with the front group and was up there to have a good finish. The car probably was not strong enough to improve where were at the time, but we ended up with a good solid finish for the season so far, but we have a bit more work to do on racing and the car. Ryan's pace was good relative to the field. The car appeared to be a little too loose for his liking around here and that makes a car tough to drive. Unfortunately he didn't get to finish the race and we just need to put it all together for the whole race distance and I think there are some good finishes there for him in the future."
