Answers remain elusive in Denver
Joey Hand #27 DSTP Motorsports Toyota Swift 014.a
The handling problems that plagued DSTP Motorsports on Friday continued on Saturday, as Joey Hand settled for an eleventh place showing in final qualifying. The performance cast a cloud darker than the ones accompanying incoming storms on Hand's chances in tomorrow's 37-lap race.
Entering the Round 11 event, Hand was riding a streak of three, top-five finishes in previous races and was hoping to carry that into a podium this weekend on the 1.647-mile temporary street course in Denver. In all three events, the car performed much better than it did in practice and qualifying. However, Hand will be starting further back in the field tomorrow than in the past three races and will have to muster up a strong performance just to keep the top-five streak going.
A.J. Allmendinger secured the pole with a track record time of 1:06.966 seconds (88.540 mph). Allmendinger was followed by Michael Valiante and Aaron Justus.
As down as everyone is about what has transpired so far this weekend, the DSTP team will buckle down tonight in attempts to figure out how to get Hand competitive by tomorrow morning. The Atlantic cars are back on track bright and early for their 15-minute warm-up session at 8:00 a.m. MST, and will be followed by the 10:30 a.m. MST start of the Round 11 race.
Speed Channel will carry Hand's attempt to fight through the field at 2:00 p.m. EST, 12:00 p.m. local time. For those that miss tomorrow's race, Speed Channel will rebroadcast the race on September 5th at 2:00 p.m. EST.
Hand on Saturday Practice:
"That session was pretty much a wash for us due to the track being wet and dry at the same time. We played around with some things toward the end that I think will help us later this afternoon, but I would have liked to have had more time on a dry track. Yesterday was tough for us, but I think we are going in the right direction. We'll just see how it works out this afternoon."
Hand on Saturday Qualifying:
"I really don't even know what to say. I have never had it this bad where we can't figure out what is going on. It feels like something is broken because nothing we do seems to work. Hopefully we'll find out what it is tonight. All I know is that something is very wrong right now and we are all pretty frustrated by it."
