DOUBLE-HEADER AT EDMONTON
The last leg of the Champ Car Atlantic tour of Canada took place last weekend with a double-header at Edmonton.
Ryan Lewis had a tough start to the weekend as he was suffering from a virus but he still managed to qualify within the top ten (ninth) for race one. When the race got underway Ryan made steady progress until an ambitious move by John Edwards resulted in Ryan going off the track and having to rejoin at the back of the field. He picked his way back through the pack from 18th all the way back up to ninth, his final position not a reflection of his pace.
"It was youthful exuberance on John Edwards' part again," said Ryan. "Robert (Wickens) got past and got a good run on me into turn one on the restart, so I had to slow up a little bit to let him get through and the group in front of me were quite slow through high speeds and it was quite hard to follow each other. John decided he was going to have a go up the inside at five and I think he was lucky enough that I'm probably one of the more experienced guys on the grid and I didn't turn in on him. He'll learn."
Team owner, Derrick Walker added, "It's a pity Ryan got caught up in the incident early on in the race, because his car and his aggressive driving style was creating some good moves through the pack to come back to ninth. It just shows the potential is there, we just have to catch a break and I think we'll show what we can do."
Ryan got a great start from 11th on the grid in race two, soon moving up to eighth place. On lap 14 he felt something was amiss with his car so he pulled over, concerned there was damage, continuing on when he realised all was well. He rejoined in 18th and moved up to 15th by the chequered flag.
Ryan explains: "Unfortunate really, we had a great car. The car in front of me flicked off a cone from the outside of the track into my wheel and it wouldn't have been an issue, but in the heat of the moment I saw a lot of smudge and convinced myself that the car was broken, so I pulled over and stopped. When I stopped I second guessed myself and I don't know why I did it, very strange. Other than that we would have had a really good day I'm sure. We were quicker than the guys in front of us and we had a good car, I think we could have gone forward from where we were. It was a bit of a silly mistake on my part. We pushed hard and proved that we were competitive, we know we are there, now we move onto San Jose."
There is no let up in Ryan's schedule as he heads straight to San Jose for the next race this weekend.
