Skerlong Suffers Second Straight Edmonton Retirement

Edmonton, Canada -- Carl Skerlong posted his second straight retirement in Edmonton on Sunday as a mechanical issue limited his track time to a mere seven laps in Round 10 of the 2007 Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, the second half of the weekend's double-header race meeting.

His retirement, thought to be attributed to a wheel bearing issue, followed what had been his highest starting position on the grid -- the Seattle-born rookie qualifying third from the 24-car line-up in the #24 King Taco/US RaceTronics Swift Mazda-Cosworth.

In the end the 1.973-mile Edmonton City Centre Airport layout proved to be a cruel setting for Skerlong and it brings to an end a frustrating four-race tour of Canada through July for the 18-year-old American. A disappointing 19th place finish at Mont-Tremblant kicked off the month followed by a wet and chaotic outing in Toronto a week later -- Carl taken out of the race having been hit from behind under a full-course caution.

A promising top-five run in Edmonton was cut short yesterday, once again contact from a rival ending Carl's hopes of a healthy points paying finish just 10 laps into the ninth round. Sunday's retirement means Carl fails to score a point for the first time since the season-opener in Las Vegas back in April, the reigning Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Champion now sitting 12th overall in the Driver Standings with two rounds remaining.

"We'd been running really well and definitely had the speed to stay at the front," reflected Skerlong. "I started to lose power, I wasn't sure at first if it was the motor but it looks like it was a wheel bearing that was out. This isn't what we wanted, especially after what happened in Saturday's race. I guess it's just one of those things and we again have to move on. All the guys worked really hard this weekend and it's a shame things have ended this way as we deserved more with the pace we showed."

Raphael Matos went two-for-two in Edmonton, the Brazilian winning his sixth race of the year on Sunday heading home America's Jonathan Bomarito and France's Franck Perera.

Rounds 9 and 10 from Edmonton will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Monday 23rd July starting at 5pm EST.

The penultimate round of the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship, Round 11, will be held on the streets of San Jose, California, Friday 27th -- Sunday 29th July, at the San Jose Grand Prix
