Sofio Celebrates 5th C2 Cup Win

Justin Sofio (Mathiasen Motorsports/RLM Investments Swift 008) posted his fifth win of the season in the Yokohama Tire C2 Cup championship with another convincing victory before a record crowd of 78,080 at Finning International Raceway in Edmonton. This followed Justin's victory a week earlier on the streets of Toronto and sustains his lead in the C2 championship over closest rival Dan Cobb.

"I didn't have the fastest car today, so I just had to stay calm, look at the points and try to keep racking them up, " said Sofio.

This he did, although the weekend certainly didn't have a promising beginning. Sofio, race engineer Cam Binder and crewman Kyle Kilborn worked hard to overcome a balky gearbox and broken steering wheel which limited them to only five laps in Friday qualifying. As Saturday's second session took place in wet conditions, there was no opportunity to improve or to fine tune their race setup.

Nonetheless, when it counted Justin made the most of clear and dry race day conditions, immediately pulling away from rivals Dan Cobb and Daryl Leiski. Driving a strong tactical race on the demanding airport circuit, Sofio built an early lead and was never headed on his way to a ninth overall finish and victory circle for his fifth C2 class win in seven starts.

"Edmonton was just awesome," Justin remarked. "It's a very fast and demanding track, and the fans were incredible. I also really appreciated all of the local help I received."

Justin welcomed much needed support from Regional1, Alberta's newest airline, and an enthusiatic entourage from Advantage West Inns in the booming oil sands city of Fort McMurray. Sofio's Edmonton pit crew even included motorsports novelist Anthony Hampshire as writer-in-residence.

Since leaving his California home following his first win in Long Beach in the season opener, Justin has had a very productive North American tour. He returns to home ground for Round 9 of the series in San Jose with a remarkable record of four wins from six appearances in Portland, Cleveland, Toronto and Edmonton.

Justin Sofio has clearly emerged as the man to beat and he has a real opportunity to clinch both the Yokohama Tire C2 Cup Championship, and the C2 Rookie of the Year honors at Round 9 in San Jose. Stay tuned.
