WORTHTINGTON, Ohio -- Andy Jones, the former chief mechanic of the Tasman Motorsports Group, recently joined the ranks of KOOL/ToyotaAtlantic Championship team, Active Motorsports.
Active Motorsports is now entering its second year of competition and planning to run a two-car team during this upcoming season. Team owners Malcolm Ross and George Greco are excited to have Andy aboard.
"Andy's experience and talent will add a great deal of depth to our program. We are looking forward to a successful 99’ season," Ross said.
As chief mechanic, Jones brings with him 27 years of invaluable motorsports experience. "I feel confident in saying that Andy's credentials are unparalleled to most chief mechanics in the Atlantic paddock. We have surrounded ourselves with over qualified key members throughout our team," Greco said. In 1989, Jones joined the Truesports Judd IndyCar engine development program at Truepower in Indianapolis and continued as an engine assembly specialist until 1992. At Truesports, he became actively involved in the development and building of the American Indy car. In 1993, Andy joined the newly formed Tasman Motorsports Group as an Indy Lights chief mechanic. His driver, Steve Robertson, brought Tasman their first Indy Lights win on the streets of Long Beach and finished as Rookie of the Year.
The following season, Jones again helped to lead Eddie Lawson to a Tasman victory at Cleveland and consistent podium finishes. With back to back championships in 1993 and 1994,Tasman Motorsports moved up to the Champ Car level. Jones served as gearbox specialist and refueler on the pit crew of Andre Ribiero. The following year, Jones served as lead mechanic for Adrian Fernandez during a season highlighted by a victory in Toronto. Jones took over as chief mechanic on the Tecate/QuakerState car driven again by Adrian Fernandez in 1997.
"As an active participant in CART events for over a decade I have come to realize the importance of educating our future driving stars and the hardworking crew people supporting them. My appointment to Active Motorsports as chief mechanic offers me the opportunity to be a part of a team with a bright future. I am excited and confident that we can establish Active Motorsports as a leader in the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship series," Jones said.
