James Hinchcliffe was not all that impressed with his #3 Indeck car when qualifications began on Thursday. But, after running the fastest lap in the session at 1.05.91, he seemed willing to change his opinion of his Forsythe Racing car to the positive. "Hinch" took the pole in 2007 at the first race in Edmonton, a race in which he finished third. The driver posted his first 2008 win at Laguna Seca and hopes to add to that total tomorrow.
"Anytime you get a pole position, it's a great feeling," Hinchcliffe said. "To do it on home soil, obviously, makes it that much more special. Frankly, I'm surprised to be up here. We weren't really running that well in the session. The car wasn't quite where I wanted it. I think we need to work on our race car over a long stint. We managed to put in one good lap, but it's a 50-minute race. We've got to be there at the end."
In addition to Hinchcliffe, fellow Canadians Kevin Lacroix will start 11th, and rookie Daniel Morad starts 7th on Friday.
Jonathan Bomarito, driving the #26 King Taco car for Mathiasen Motorsports, will share the front row with Hinchcliffe. Bomarito's fast lap of 1.06.053 held the pole for two laps until bested by the Canadian.
"In a field that's this competitive, it's important to start up front," Bomarito said. "Being on the front row is a great feeling. It's nice to be at the sharp end of the grid again. It's been a rough last couple races, but as soon as we rolled the car out of the trailer for the first practice this morning, I knew it would be a good weekend. The guys are doing a great job. The car is running well, and we're looking forward to a good result. It's an important weekend for everybody. It's a double race weekend, so being up front and finishing strong in both races here is going to be key."
Also starting up front on row two will be Carl Skerlong and rookie Dane Cameron, in his best starting position of the season. On row three, Markus Niemela will be joined by Skerlong's teammate, Mexican driver David Garza.
Among standouts from earlier in the 2008 season, Long Beach winner Simona De Silvestro will start 13th, although the Swiss driver tends to finish much better than she qualifies, while Mont Tremblant victor Junior Strous starts 9th.
As Jonathan Bomarito noted, this is a very competitive field, and with over half the drivers rookies, it should be a wild day Friday in Edmonton.
