Schroeder Postpones Indy 500 Plans for Now

VINELAND, N.J., May 5 - Jeret Schroeder, who was trying to become the first resident of New Jersey to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in 14 years, has been forced to postpone those plans this year because some of the sponsorship money he anticipated receiving has been delayed.

Robbie Groff drove the McCormack Motorsports/Alfa Laval/Team Losi/Goodyear-sponsored G-Force Olds Aurora No. 30 on Sunday in practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the team will compete in the event as planned. McCormack Motorsports is 14th in the overall Indy Racing League point standings, so it will automatically qualify for the 500 after Groff comes up to an as-yet-undetermined percentage of the polesitter's speed.

Schroeder drove that car in the Indy Racing League events at Walt Disney World (Fla.) Speedway on Jan. 25 and at Phoenix Int'l Raceway March 23. The Indy 500 will be held May 25.

Schroeder, a 27-year-old rising star from Vineland, N.J., anticipated receiving some sponsorship funds for the Indy 500 which were delayed due to business reasons beyond anyone's control. Schroeder is now concentrating on raising funds for other events, including next year's Indy 500.

"It looks like Indy just wasn't meant to be for me this year," Schroeder said. "I've enjoyed working with everyone at McCormack Motorsports, and I hope we'll work with them again in the future. But the Indianapolis 500 is an expensive proposition, and all the funding must be in place before May. It has always been my dream to compete in the Indianapolis 500, but it doesn't look like it will happen for me this year.

"Of course I'm disappointed, but this will give me more time to test my SCCA Kool Toyota Atlantic car," Schroeder added philosophically. He is driving the MCI Telecommunications/Toyota Ralt RT-41 No. 96 for Precision Preparation, Inc. of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., in all the 1997 Atlantic events.
