NWR DRIVERS QUALIFY ON ROW THREE FOR LIME ROCK RACE
Lakeville, CT (July 17, 2009) - With qualifying for round five of the Atlantic Championship complete today at Lime Rock Park, Newman Wachs Racing drivers can now focus on the race tomorrow. Qualifying today was treacherous. Under wet conditions, the teammates fought a tough battle, but ultimately, didn't end up where they had hoped. They will start alongside one another in row three, with Edwards 5th and Summerton 6th for tomorrow's race.
This morning's practice session was completed under dry conditions, so the information learned wasn't relevant for qualifying. While both drivers found themselves at the top of the charts at one time or another over the course of the 35 minute qualification run, at the end they both fell down the grid.
Summerton is currently 2nd in overall standings while Edwards sits 3rd. Both drivers know how to get to the front, and both have had battled their way to a podium in the past. Hopefully tomorrow will be one of those days.
John Edwards #36 MAZDASPEED/ Nuclear Clean Air Energy/ Entergy Newman Wachs Racing (P5: 60.348 seconds):
"It was one of those sessions where nobody stayed p1 the whole session, and then at the end, I just didn't get a good time in. Simona put a really good lap together to put her on pole. At this point, any of us in the top six or seven can run together; I don't think anyone is really dominant. We're hoping it rains tomorrow so it will be a good race, otherwise there won't be any passing at all."
Jonathan Summerton #34 Nuclear Clean Air Energy/ Entergy/ Newman Wachs Racing (P6: 60.473 seconds):
"We were just unlucky with the timing circumstances. Everyone's last lap is always their fastest, but mine was cut short due to the way the checkered flag fell. I think we missed it by a second or two. That's just the way things happen sometimes, the way the flags fall. If you're the last car to cross the timing line and you've been quick, you're going to be on pole. Had we had that last lap, we would have been P3, but I'm not making excuses; we just didn't get it done. We're still struggling a little bit with the car, so I'm working with my engineer to figure out what we can do to make things better tomorrow."
Team owner Eddie Wachs is no stranger to Lime Rock. It is the first time for the NWR team, but not for Eddie himself. He tells, "In the late 60s to early 70s during the early Trans-Am days, Horst Kwech and I terrorized Lime Rock in Alfa GTAs. In the early 80s we were dominant in the under two liter Can-Am series driving the Toleman converted F2 Championship cars. I have lots of time there and hundreds of laps, although I never competed against Newman there. I did, however, compete against Danny Sullivan in Newman's Can-Am car." Eddie will be racing later this year in one of his Tolemans, once again with his friend and fellow driver, Kwech.
