Joey Hand No. 27 DSTP Motorsports Toyota Swift 8th in Long Beach Provisional Qualifying.
The first day of track time for Joey Hand and DSTP Motorsports did not quite turn out as planned as the team struggled throughout the day to find the necessary speed needed to run up front. Although Hand improved his time in the afternoon provisional qualifying session with a time of 1:18.412 seconds (90.354 mph), it was not near enough to catch Aaron Justus, who went on to capture the bonus point for the provisional pole with a time of 1:17.260 seconds (91.701 mph).
Despite the threat of rain for Sunday morning's race, there is still plenty of time left to climb back up to the top where Hand spent most of the weekend in the season opening event in Monterrey. The DSTP team will put their heads down tonight and go to work on just how Hand will defend his 2002 Long Beach pole. Final qualifying will begin tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. PST.
Team owner and one of the icons of the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship. Dede Rogers, is not in attendance this weekend in Long Beach as she attends to a sick friend in her hometown of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since entering DSTP Motorsports into the series in 2000 where they won the title with driver, Buddy Rice, Rogers has become a mainstay in the Atlantic Paddock. Her presence is not only missed by her team, but by many others that take part in the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship.
Hand on Friday Qualifying:
"I don't know what's going on really. The car feels pretty good to me, but we just can't run a lap. The session really didn't go that well, but I think we will figure it out as soon as we can. It will be a late night for the DSTP guys for sure, but come tomorrow, I guarantee you that we won't be eighth. I'm positive of that."
Through DSTP Motorsports, Dede Rogers has established herself as a true believer in promoting talented young American drivers into professional racing. Formed in 1994, DSTP first campaigned a team in the Dodge Shelby Pro Series before moving into the U.S. F2000 National Championship in 1995. Such notable drivers as Memo Gidley, Alex Barron, Sam Hornish, Jr. and Jerry Nadeau competed in cars fielded by DSTP before Buddy Rice swept to the Atlantic title during DSTP Motorsports first season in the series in 2000.
