Moran salvages fifth place for Sigma Autosport in today's crazy race.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Sigma Autosport Toyota Atlantic Team finishes weekend on a good note. Struggling all weekend trying to find the setup for the car that would operate best on the streets of Long Beach, they were able to finish in the top five and keep the team momentum going strong.
An interesting afternoon race took place due to several incidents happening on the track. The race was shortened by three laps when a timed finish was declared. There were a few close calls Moran encountered, but was able to steer around them and cross the finish line in one piece.
Moran posted his fastest time of 82.387 seconds (88.925 mph) finishing in fifth place. Scoring eleven points today, his total is now 21 placing him third in the championship point standings. Today's finish marks Moran's third straight top six finish dating back to Laguna Seca last year, where he won.
According to team manager Jim Griffith, the team had a successful weekend. Being able to obtain points while learning more about the car was the positive aspect of the weekend. Testing is scheduled in preparation for the team's next race in Milwaukee.
"I am happy we salvaged a fifth place out of the race today. In qualifying we really were a ninth place car and did not think that we had much left. It was a wild race with a lot of yellow flags but we worked our way up. We had some issues trying to get by guys on the straightaway. We definitely had some sections on the track where we were really good and avoided some incidents out on the track. We got lucky on the last lap when I was able to get around the car in front of me when it spun off the track down in turn nine. Overall, it was good to salvage a fifth place and get some points to keep the momentum of the team going strong. I am happy we were able to finish and avoided that parking lot in the first corner." - Rocky Moran Jr., Sigma Autosport Driver
