MICHAEL TODD DAVID MOVES INTO FOURTH PLACE IN THE KOOL/TOYOTA ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP
NAZARETH, Pa. (April 26, 1998) - Michael Todd David and the PDR-Water Joe Racing team battled "set-up" gremlins throughout the weekend but still managed to score their second top-10 finish in the 1998 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship with 10th place in Saturday's Atlantic race at the Bosch Spark Grand Prix, presented by Toyota, at Nazareth Speedway.
Saturday's 10th place finish earned six championship points but propelled David to fourth place in the Atlantic championship standings with 16 points. The 25-year-old third-year Atlantic veteran from Corona, Calif., started the race ninth, fell to 13th on two occasions, and then regained three positions to score his third consecutive top-10 Atlantic finish including last year's fourth-place finale at Laguna Seca Raceway in September, and sixth place in this year's season opener at Long Beach. "After two races, we're a little disappointed that we aren't as high in the points as we had hoped," said David. "On the flip side, we're happy that we are nonetheless finishing races and scoring points. We could use a little good luck along the way, but luck and getting the car more 'dialed in' will lead to some podium finishes soon. "Basically, my toughest challenge turned out to be my own car. When David Rutledge passed me on lap 16, I really couldn't fend him off without jeopardizing the car. I decided it was better to let him slip past than take uncalculated gambles. I ended up losing two more spots during that exchange but at least I was able to reclaim those positions later in the race." In related team news, Nazareth marked the final race for head mechanic and powertrain specialist Walter Huff. Huff recently announced his retirement from racing after 33 years within the motorsports industry. Huff has been PDR's head mechanic for the past three and a half seasons and considers his major accomplishment with the team the four of five first place finishes in the 1995 Atlantic C-2 championship. The next stop for the PDR Enterprises/Water Joe Racing team in the 1998 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship will be round three on the 1.25-mile oval at Gateway International Raceway (Madison, Ill) at the Motorola 300 on May 22. The Nazareth Atlantic race will be telecast on ESPN2, Saturday, May 2, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET (11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. PT).
