Skerlong Heading to Canada for Four Race Run
Mukilteo, Washington -- Carl Skerlong will call Canada home for the next three weeks as the second half of the 2007 Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda starts with a run of four straight races north of the border through the month of July, starting with Round 7 at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, 90-minutes north of Montreal, Quebec this weekend, Friday 29th June -- Sunday 1st July.
Sunday's 'Canada Day' celebration will be followed up a week later with Round 8 hosted on the streets of Toronto, Ontario, Sunday 8th July, before the city of Edmonton in Alberta hosts Rounds 9 and 10 of the 12-race series two weeks later, Saturday 21st -- Sunday 22nd July -- the second and final double-header on the 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship schedule.
Skerlong, driver of the #24 King Taco/US RaceTronics Swift Mazda-Cosworth, will be hoping the Canadian races can see a return to the form that led to three straight top-ten finishes, including a second place podium finish in Houston, in the opening stages of the season before posting 11th and 12th place runs in Portland and Cleveland in Rounds 5 and 6 respectively.
The 18-year-old rookie, who sits ninth overall in the Driver Standings heading into a busy July, is a newcomer to the 2.65-mile Mont-Tremblant track ahead of Friday's first official practice session but as it is hosting an Atlantic race meeting for the first time since the late Gilles Villeneuve won there back in 1976, Carl isn't alone in making his debut at the picturesque and sweeping Quebec road course.
The level playing field should help the reigning Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Champion although Skerlong's already proved himself to be a fast learner having raced on four brand new circuits through the first half of the 2007 season -- Portland earlier this month being the only track he was previously familiar with. His track prowess was evidenced there in Round 4 as he recovered from a first lap incident, dropping to last, to charge his way back up the order to take eighth at the flag. Last weekend's sixth round in Cleveland again showcased Carl's on-track credentials, the US RaceTronics driver recovering from a disappointing 20th place grid slot to finish the 50-minute race in 12th.
With three top-ten grid slots to his credit from the first six events, Carl will be looking to break back into the top-ten in qualifying at Mont-Tremblant. "From what I've seen it's a fairly high speed track, there should be some passing but you can make life easier by qualifying well," said Skerlong. "I think we'll be starting from scratch with our set-up as it's such a smooth track with some elevation changes. Although Cleveland was fast it was flat so there's not much we can carry over. I think what we learned in pre-season at Laguna and MSR might be more valid, we were quick at those tracks so hopefully we'll be up there again this weekend and have a crack at a top-five finish!"
Round 7 starts at 11:30am EST on Sunday 1st July at Circuit Mont-Tremblant. The 50-minute race will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Friday 6th July starting at 6pm EST.
