Krisiloff has incident on parade lap at season opening Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix.
MONTERREY, MEXICO - SUNDAY, MARCH 23, 2003 - Round #1 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship Series - U. S. Grand Prix Formula One/Cameron Motorsports driver Kyle Krisiloff's race ended before it started as he fell victim to a parade lap incident at the season opening Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix at Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico.
Krisiloff, who qualified a Toyota Atlantic Championship career high 12th, was going up through the gears on the first of two parade laps in an attempt to stay in touch with the lead cars. As he came around a blind corner he saw Romain Dumas, who appeared stopped on track. Krisiloff dove to the inside in an attempt to avoid contact, but his right rear hit the left rear of Dumas causing extensive damage to the suspension of the #13 U.S. Grand Prix Formula One/Cameron Motorsports car.
"Toward the end of the first warm-up lap I was going up through the gears to catch the lead pack when the car in front of me started bedding his brakes," Krisiloff began. "At that point, I was going through a blind corner and, before we caught the lead pack, the car in front went into first gear and seemed to stop on track. No one expected him to do that, and I didn't see him until it was to late. I tired to avoid him, but our rear wheels touched," he explained. "It is unfortunate because the U. S. Grand Prix Formula One/Cameron Motorsports Team did a good job this weekend and I think we had a good race car. We didn't qualify as well as I would like, but we are improving and we will be very competitive at the next race," Krisiloff concluded.
The 17-year-old native of Indianapolis, Indiana, began the weekend 12th on the speed charts following Friday morning practice with a time of 93.595 seconds (80.927 mph). In Friday afternoon's qualifying, Krisiloff improved considerably knocking over three seconds off his morning practice time, however his fast lap of 90.507 seconds (83.689 mph) put him 13th on the provisional grid.
Saturday began with a morning practice and Krisiloff continued to gain speed. He turned a quick lap of 90.017 seconds (84.144 mph) placing him 12th in both the session and on the combined practice report.
In final qualifying that afternoon, Krisiloff once again improved his time gaining over two seconds. He turned a fast lap of 87.751 seconds (86.317 mph), which put him an Atlantic career best 12th on the final starting grid.
During Sunday morning's warm-up prior to the race, Krisiloff had a fast time of 90.149 seconds (84.021 mph), which placed him a weekend high of 11th in the session. However, he remained 12th on the overall combined practice report.
Krisiloff was competing in his seventh CART Toyota Atlantic Championship event, but because of the parade lap accident he did not officially start the race (DNS). The resident of Indianapolis made his Toyota Atlantic Championship debut last year running six races for the U. S. Grand Prix Formula One/Patrick Racing Team. Krisiloff finished five of the six events he contested in 2002 placing in the points three times. His best qualifying position was 14th and his best finish was 13th both achieved at the season finale in Denver. Krisiloff placed 28th in the championship standings with six points.
Krisiloff is the son of former Champ Car driver Steve Krisiloff. His mother is Josie George, sister of Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Tony George.
Next up for the U. S. Grand Prix Formula One/Cameron Motorsports Team is the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, April 11-13 on the temporary street circuit in Long Beach, California.
