Dalziel ready and raring for Montreal
As the 2004 Toyota Atlantic Championship arrives in Montreal, Canada this weekend for the penultimate round of the 12-race series, 27th-29th August, it could scarcely be closer at the top of the points standings with Scotland's Ryan Dalziel shadowing America's Jon Fogarty by a solitary point, the current total 261-260.
This weekend's Molson Indy Montreal, hosted on the 2.709-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, will witness Dalziel and Fogarty continue their season-long title battle in Round 11, the duo sharing four wins apiece from the ten rounds to-date. Dalziel, piloting the Sierra Sierra Enterprises #28 ProWorks Swift, has doggedly pursued his title dream having been as far back as 19-points off Fogarty's lead earlier in the season.
The 22-year-old Orlando resident has shown exceptional grit and determination to fight back and claim three wins from the past five rounds to slash Fogarty's points lead to one heading back across the border for the third of three Canadian excursions on this year's Toyota Atlantic schedule. In addition to his four wins, Dalziel has proved to be the man to beat in qualifying with the Scot leading his rivals with five pole positions. His race pace has been equally impressive with four fastest race laps recorded as well as two additional podium finishes, both second places.
Ryan's second place finish last time out in Denver, coupled with Fogarty's race penalty for blocking and subsequent sixth place finish, further slashed the deficit in the points, setting up what will undoubtedly be a thrilling weekend in Montreal. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, home to the Canadian Grand Prix, is listed as one of Dalziel's favorite tracks with two podium finishes from two starts giving the title hopeful reason to be optimistic for another strong finish in Sunday's 25-lap race.
"Montreal's one of my favorite cities and the same applies to the circuit," Dalziel remarked. "I finished third there in 2002 and second last year. It would be nice to complete the podium finishes with a victory come Sunday but my focus is simply to keep taking points from Jon and take the title fight down to the wire at Laguna Seca in September."
Sunday's race, Round 11 of the 2004 Toyota Atlantic Championship - the Molson Indy Montreal, is scheduled to start at 11am Eastern Time. Full event details and live timings from Friday and Saturday's qualifying sessions as well as Sunday's race will be available online at www.toyotaatlantic.com
