TEAM KOOL GREEN'S ALEX GURNEY IS 11TH ON THE GRID FOR TOMORROW'S RACE
MONTREAL, Quebec (June 11, 1999) - Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney will start from the sixth row after qualifying 11th for tomorrow's 27-lap race on the 2.745-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve beginning at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
Alexandre Tagliani won the pole for tomorrow's race, clocking a record time of 1:36.739 at an average speed of 102.15 mph. Anthony Lazzaro, winner of the last three poles, will line-up next to Tagliani after a lap of 1:36.934 (101.94 mph). Rookie William Langhorne surprised many Atlantic competitors with the third fastest time of 1:37.315 (101.54 mph). Andrew Bordin will share the outside of row two with Langhorne. Gurney, meanwhile, suffered gearbox problems in the morning practice session. Those problems limited his track time and hampered him further in the afternoon. He hustled his KOOL car around the 2.745-mile circuit in 1:39.127 seconds (99.690 mph).
ESPN2 will televise the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship race on Saturday, June 19, at 12 noon, with a repeat broadcast on Thursday, June 24, at 2 p.m.
ALEX GURNEY, #27 Team KOOL Green Toyota/Swift: (14th in the overall standings with 7 points)
10th IN MORNING PRACTICE WITH A LAP OF 1:40.520 seconds / 98.308 mph: 11th IN QAULIFYING WITH A LAP OF 1:39.127 seconds / 99.690 mph:
"It was a little frustrating this morning. At the end of practice, we started to have gearbox problems. So, we didn't get to put a real lap together in the last half hour. It's something that we had to bring in and take apart. At one point, we started to get a balance together, but if you can't shift, you're not going to go forward, so it was a little rough at the end. I wish we had done a little better in qualifying. It's going to be a fun race and hopefully we can move up. This is such a nice track."
