FAIRFIELD, N.J. (January 21, 2000) — Reigning U.S. Formula 2000 National and Oval Crown Champion Dan Wheldon has signed on to race with PPI Motorsports in the 2000 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship. Wheldon joins returning driver and former F2000 star Andrew Bordin at PPI Motorsports in defense of the team’s 1999 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship, won by Anthony Lazzaro. Wheldon will contest the entire 12-race schedule in the No. 3 Jayhard Swift. Last year, Wheldon, of England, had a dream rookie campaign in the U.S. F2000 National Championship. The 21-year-old Wheldon, won six races, finished on the podium 11 times and captured five pole positions en route to winning the Drivers’ Championship, the Road To Indy Oval Crown Championship and Rookie of the Year. Wheldon became the first driver in series history, to ever accomplish this feat. In winning the U.S. F2000 National Championship Wheldon was awarded a CART Toyota Atlantic car. This past December Wheldon ran a very succesful test in the PPI Motorsports Atlantic car. Wheldon moves into the seat vacated by Champion, Lazzaro, who was promoted to the team’s Bush grand national ride. Wheldon’s 1999 F2000 title also came with a defending champion—Primus Racing. “This is an excellent opportunity to move into what is known as one of the toughest championships in the U.S.," said Wheldon. "It's an absolute dream. Everyone on the PPI Motorsports team is very professional, and they have the hunger to do very, very well. We have the same goals, so I plan to work hard, stay focused, learn as much as I can and be as consistent as possible for a good finish in the championship."
