NEWMAN WACHS RACING and ENTERGY NUCLEAR TO VISIT GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Mundelein, IL (September 26, 2008) -The season finale of the Cooper Tires Presents the Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda will be decided at Road Atlanta October 3. During the race week, Newman Wachs Racing (NWR) will be stopping at the Georgia Institute of Technology as part of their nuclear energy initiative off- track university tour.
On Monday, September 29, Georgia Tech will host a recruiting session featuring the number 34 "Nuclear Clean Air Energy" racecar along with female driver Simona De Silvestro, who is the current spokesperson for the 2008 campaign. Newman Wachs Racing, Entergy, and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) are funding a nuclear education outreach program to implement college recruiting programs on campuses with engineering curricula.
The consensus of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, released in 2007, is that over the next five years, many new graduates will be needed to replace a retiring workforce. Engineers from varying backgrounds will be required when new nuclear power plants are approved for construction. Over the next 10 years, as many as 90,000 nuclear professionals will be needed to meet the needs of this industry in the U.S.
"This is an exciting time of growth for nuclear energy as America confronts mutual concerns of rising energy demand, environmental impact and energy independence," explained Mike Kansler, Entergy chief nuclear officer. "That's why Entergy feels it is crucial to talk with new entrants into the country's labor force about the many opportunities available in the commercial nuclear power industry."
Entergy Nuclear, the sponsor of the Swift 016 formula car, is the second-largest owner and operator of nuclear power plants in the U.S. and was named to the 2007 Forbes list of America's Most Trustworthy Companies.
Team owners Paul Newman and Eddie Wachs noted, "The objective of our partnership with Entergy and NEI is to aid overall public awareness and to promote public policy that supports the beneficial uses of nuclear energy. It's a long road, so what better way to start at than at the race track?"
NWR will be racing at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia as part of the Petit Le Mans weekend which runs from October 1-4 and will be looking to win the Championship with American driver Jonathan Summerton.
