CHAMP CAR ATLANTIC SERIES POISED TO LAUNCH CAREERS OF NEXT GENERATION OF CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES STARS
INDIANAPOLIS (February 13, 2006) -- The list of Champ Car Atlantic graduates that have gone on to stardom in the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford is long and distinguished and features some of the legends of motorsport, but 2006's version of the world's top open-wheel developmental series is all about the future.
The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Presented by Yokohama will open a new chapter in its long and storied history this week when the new Swift 016.a chassis is unveiled for the first time. The 2006 version of the Swift chassis, paired with its dynamic 300-horsepower Cosworth powerplant, has already sent a shockwave of expectation through the racing world -- a wave that will crest at the season-opening Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach April 7-9.
The drivers and teams of the Champ Car Atlantic Championship will race side-by-side with their Champ Car brethren in 2006, holding each of their 12 events at the three-day festivals of speed headlined by the 750hp turbocharged rockets of the Champ Car World Series. The new-look series has already attracted more than 40 orders for the cars for 2006 with teams both old and new lining up to take possession of the Atlantic machines.
"As we continue building the future of the Champ Car World Series, the Champ Car Atlantic Championship will play a key role in our growth strategy," said Champ Car President Steve Johnson. "As the owners and operators of the Champ Car Atlantic series, Champ Car will commit every one of our company's resources to helping the Atlantic series prosper now and in the future. Everything we do at Champ Car, whether it be in our technical development, race operations or marketing and sales departments, will benefit the Atlantic series as well as the Champ Car World Series."
Champ Car teams have been quick to join the rising tide of new Atlantic squads for what will be the series' 33rd season of competition, including a four-car outfit from Forsythe Championship Racing, a planned multi-car effort from six-time Champ Car titlewinner Paul Newman, and two cars each from Team Australia and from Mi-Jack/Conquest Racing.
The next generation Champ Car Atlantic series, with an unprecedented $2 million prize to be awarded to its champion in 2006, is the most direct pipeline to a seat in the Champ Car World Series and is thriving as the top level of North America's open-wheel driver development system.
"The Atlantic series is the direct link to the future of Champ Car, so it is encouraging to see so many current Champ Car teams investing their resources to the 2006 Atlantic series," Johnson said. "The series is not only the proving grounds for the world's top young driving talent, but also for the next generation of engineers, mechanics and team owners, and we are thrilled to be able to track their growth throughout each Atlantic event this season."
