(LAKEVILLE, Conn.) April 9, 2002 -Barber Dodge Pro Series Champion Nicolas Rondet has signed with Condor Motorsports to contest the balance of the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship Series. The Frenchman begins his assault this coming weekend at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, site of the second round of the Atlantic Series.
The late signing has meant little testing opportunity for Rondet to prepare for the race that he contested once before in 1999. There was an opportunity to complete a short test at Buttonwillow Raceway in California earlier this week that yielded encouraging results.
"I wouldn't be in this position without winning the Barber Dodge Pro Series title, so choosing to run that series last year has paid off," said Rondet. "Relative to the other teams, we don't have a big budget, but that has been the case my whole career. Coming into this situation though from Barber Dodge where the driver is the only advantage, I feel like my experience and background will allow me to be competitive. Having said that I will be up against a lot of former Barber Dodge drivers that have the same background. Nevertheless I think that we will surprise some people and be very competitive."
Winning the 2001 Barber Dodge Pro Series proved that Rondet has the talent and he brings the added value of $250,000 as a result of winning the Career Enhancement Award.
"I have no doubt that Nicolas has the ability and determination to be a force in the Toyota-Atlantic Championship in 2002 and we are proud to be able assist him with our Career Enhancement Award. The main goal of Barber-Dodge is to give our drivers a platform from which they can build a professional racing career. Nicolas is another example of how a driver who works hard and stays focused can succeed in this most demanding of sports," said Jeremy Dale, Managing Director of the Barber Dodge Pro Series.
CART President and CEO, Christopher Pook:
"Nicolas Rondet and his peers in both Barber Dodge and Toyota Atlantic are the future of CART. It pleases me to see that the combination of the Barber-CART Scholarships and the combined efforts of the Skip Barber and Toyota Atlantic organizations have seen to it that talent doesn't die on the vine."
Toyota Atlantic President and CEO, Vicki O' Connor:
"I am very pleased that Nicolas Rondet, the 2001 Barber/Dodge Champion, is joining the Toyota Atlantic series at Long Beach. Nicolas is a very talented driver with a lot of experience and he should do very well in the series. It is also gratifying to see the CART Ladder System working as we designed it."
