"I think the biggest thing about the session was it was cooler (than Friday)," reflected Patrick. "We were set up for later in the run and it worked out."
Patrick, who is second in the points standing, laid down a lap at 1:07.155 for a speed of 105.553 miles per hour on the 1.969-mile road course. She became the first woman racer to take the pole in Atlantic history.
"I'm just so happy for my team, most of all," added a very happy Patrick. "They were here (working on the car) until 9 p.m. last night and I got to go out and have a nice dinner. They worked their butts off."
Veteran racer and race one polesitter, Jon Fogarty took the second slot a mere 0.036 seconds behind Patrick. The Pacific Coast Motorsports driver was just an eyelash in front of Ryan Dalziel by 0.075 seconds.
Sierra Sierra's Dalziel will start third in race two on Sunday, an improved position over his seventh position for today's race.
Lynx Racing's Bryan Sellers will start fifth in race one and fourth in race two. Points leader Ronnie Bremmer did not improve his grid position for race two; he will start both races in eighth position.
Race one will take place today at 12:15 pm (PDT) and race two on Sunday at 10:00 am (PDT).
