MICHAEL TODD DAVID AND PDR/WATER JOE RACING TEAM LOOK TO REGROUP AT TORONTO
CORONA, Calif. (July 14, 1998) - Learning from the past to make good on the future has bred a quiet optimism within the PDR/Water Joe Racing team and driver Michael Todd David as they head to Toronto this weekend for the Molson Indy Toronto and round seven of the 13-race KOOL/TOYOTA Atlantic Championship, Saturday, July 18.
The 42-lap/72.282-mile Atlantic race around the 1.721-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit of Toronto's Exhibition Place is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. ET. This is the ninth consecutive appearance of the Atlantic series at Toronto, and is a featured support event for the CART FedEx Champ car race the following day.
David comes to Toronto following a disappointing 19th place finish at Cleveland but on the heels of a steep learning curve. A variety of factors impacted the Water Joe team on the rough Cleveland airport circuit. Leading the list was the in-season rule changes imposed by the series which have significantly altered the known effectiveness of the Ralt RT-41 on familiar circuits. "It's incredible the effect a five-eighths thick piece of plywood has on a car we've become totally familiar with over the last three seasons." David explained. "We couldn't even go back to old shock and set-up data used at Cleveland the last two times we were there. Putting a car with no ground effects on a rough track presents some real challenges to a driver and his team. It's easy to see why most of the bigger teams switched to the Swift chassis so quickly. I've put seventy test miles on our Swift, but it's extremely uncomfortable on my shoulders. That's one of the main reasons we're still struggling with the handicapped Ralt. We're looking at the upper portion of the Swift's cockpit to see how it can be modified to fit me."
David remains optimistic of his chances around Exhibition Place's curvy street circuit. His recent road racing results have been front-running in which he has scored top-10 finishes in three of his last four road course events including fourth place at last year's season finale at Laguna Seca, and respective sixth place and seventh place finishes at Long Beach and Montreal this year.
David, is 13th overall in the Atlantic championship with 25 points, also he is in seventh place after one round (Montreal) of the four-round Player's Challenge for the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship. The Player's Challenge will recognize the efforts of the 15 highest placing Atlantic drivers who earn the most points in the series' Canadian Atlantic events. A total prize fund of $70,000 (US) has been set aside for the 1998 Player's Challenge.
ESPN2 will telecast the Cleveland Atlantic race on Sunday, July 19, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. PT). The Toronto Atlantic race will be televised on ESPN2 on Sunday, July 26, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET (10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. PT).
