Dalziel on double duty in Portland
Following the frustrations of Monterrey and Milwaukee, Ryan Dalziel's hoping for a reversal of fortune when the Toyota Atlantic Championship visits Portland International Raceway this weekend, 18-20th June, for the only double-header event of the year. With Round 4 set for Saturday and Round 5 on Sunday the Sierra Sierra Enterprises racer will be hoping to enjoy similar success at the west-coast track from last year's visit where he stormed to pole and victory on the 1.969-mile permanent road course.
The 22-year-old Scot, with two opportunities in Portland to attempt to retain the series lead, has put the disappointment of crashing out to avoid a spinning back marker in Milwaukee two weeks ago firmly behind him. Competing in the #28 ProWorks Swift which he qualified third, Dalziel was comfortably in control of second place with just five laps remaining when the accident happened. The oval track bit hard and while Ryan emerged from the accident relatively unscathed the same could not be said of his race car and his lead of the driver standings.
Now sitting fourth overall, just ten points behind current leader Ronnie Bremer, Ryan's hungrier than ever to recapture the lead he held following his opening victory at Long Beach back in April.
"I'm excited about this weekend's racing prospects,' Dalziel enthused. "It's good to be heading back to Portland not least as I have an opportunity to defend my race win and pole position from 2003. The fact it's a track I enjoy and I believe we'll be quick at is a bonus as we have two opportunities to turn the disappointments of Mexico and Milwaukee around!"
He continued: "We tested in Portland straight after our California victory a couple of months ago and with the 2004 rules we still had the quickest package on the circuit. I really hope we can get back to the top step of the podium this weekend and get the title charge back on track."
Ryan heads into Portland's double-round with one victory (Long Beach), two pole positions (Long Beach, Monterrey) and two fastest race laps (Long Beach, Monterrey) from the opening three events of the year.
The action kicks off with qualifying for Round 4 on Friday (18th) at 1:45pm followed on Saturday (19th) with Round 5 qualifying at 8am. Round 4, 35-laps, is scheduled to start at 12:15pm on Saturday with Round 5, also 35-laps on Sunday (20th) starting at 10:30am. All times Pacific Standard Time.
