Alex Garcia and Transnet Racing withdrew from Portland.

Portland (OR) June 15th, 2002. Venezuelan driver Alex Garcia, member of Transnet Racing, did no compete in the fifth race in the Toyota Atlantic season, due to mechanical problems. The race was held on the road course at Portland International Raceway, in Portland (OR).

Transnet Racing tested the car in Buttonwillow the week before, after the race at Laguna Seca, and made progress with the 014 chassis. Garcia ran 16th fastest in the first qualifying session on Friday, at Portland.

"We hit the track on Saturday, with a car based on the changes we decided on Friday, and we were confident we had a competitive car," Garcia said. "When I went I noticed the car had braking problems. I returned to the pits and the mechanics found that a brake line had been pinched causing the lack of braking on that wheel. At the end of the session, when I was trying to overtake Sepp Koster, I was told to return to the pits. I didn't know the car was loosing oil pressure. The crew found one of the oil line fittings cracked in two due to vibration which caused the engine to run without oil for a few seconds damaging the main bearings and leaving us no alternative but to withdraw from the race".

Greg Sorrentino, Transnet Racing Team Manager said: "During qualifying we had one of the break lines pinched. Then, toward the end of the session we had a loss of oil pressure due to a broken fitting. During the test at Buttonwillow, last week we decided to go with this particular engine for Portland, and we sent the other two engines we had to the shop for rebuilding, so we didn't have a spare engine here at Portland."

The next Toyota Atlantic Championship race will be at the one-mile oval in Chicago, June 30th.
