Breuers scores maiden Barber Dodge victory at Mid-Ohio.
INDIANAPOLIS (August 12, 2002) - It was a day of firsts in the Barber Dodge Pro Series this weekend during a thrilling Round 8 at the CART Grand Prix Of Mid-Ohio as Marc Breuers captured his first career victory and AJ Allmendinger secured his first professional championship after finishing the race in third place. Rafael Sperafico of Toledo Parana, Brazil finished in second place to complete the podium. Dan Di Leo of Markham, Ont. and Leonardo Maia of Oakland, Calif. rounded out the top five.
Breuers, starting fifth and still having a mathematical chance to win the championship heading into the race, moved up quickly to take the lead on Lap 11 from polesitter Christian Szymczak in a Turn 7 pass after a battle that lasted several laps. From there, he would lead the rest of the way to win by 0.206-seconds over a hard charging Sperafico.
"This is a great day and the culmination of two years of hard work and sweat," said Breuers, a resident of Philadelphia, Penn. who has raced in the Pro Series since 2000. "Honestly, I never thought the race would end and was tremendously happy to see the white flag when I did. Wow, this feels so good."
Allmendinger, starting second, fell back to fifth place early as he struggled with a rebuilt racecar that had been heavily damaged in a crash during final qualifying on Saturday. As the car's handling got better, he was able to move up to third place and secure the championship with still two races to go. Almost one year to the day after making his professional racing debut in the Pro Series at Mid-Ohio, Allmendinger reflected on the weekend and the past year.
"There are no words for how exciting winning the Barber Dodge Pro Series Championship is for me," commented the 20-year old Allmendinger, a resident of Hollister, Calif. "At the same time, I am tremendously relieved. There was a lot of pressure heading into the weekend and I was worried early in the race. But we stuck with it and everything worked out. As I said after Vancouver, I have come a long way since last year's Mid-Ohio race when I made my debut."
Race winner Breuers also added his best wishes to Allmendinger.
"Congratulations to AJ for winning the championship - he certainly deserves it," continued Breuers. "I don't like to get beat but there is not a better driver in the paddock right now than AJ."
