ELKHART LAKE, Wisc., (Aug. 15, 1998) - Team KOOL Green drivers Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy will start from the sixth and the 17th positions respectively on the grid for tomorrow's 50-lap Texaco/Havoline 200 at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Michael Andretti earned his first pole since 1995 with a sensational lap of 1:39.968 seconds at 145.746 mph. Andretti will share the front row with Bryan Herta, who clocked in at 1:40.069 seconds (145.628 mph). Herta's final lap was his quickest, bumpin g his teammate Bobby Rahal to third (1:40.344 seconds / 145.228 mph). Scott Pruett will start on the outside of row two.

Franchitti was third fastest yesterday, but could not improve upon his time (1:40.640 seconds / 144.298 mph) after spinning off in Turn 14 during the final 10 minutes of today's qualifying. He dropped to sixth while waiting for the session to end, leavin g him to line-up on the outside of row three next to Gil de Ferran. Tracy, on the other hand, improved his time and will start tomorrow's race from the ninth row. His fastest trip around the 4.048-mile Road America course was 1:41.823 seconds at 143.11 9 mph.

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (Starting 6th with a lap-time of 1:40.640 seconds at 144.298 mph)

"It's a tightrope and you've just got to go for it. We didn't even get the tires up to temperature before I spun off. You're not going to move up up if you're sitting in the grass. I got a little bit wide on that last corner, hit the bumps the wrong wa y and that sent the back of the car around. As long as we can pass in the race tomorrow, we'll be okay."

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (Starting 17th with a lap-time of 1:41.823 seconds at 143.119 mph)

"I'm driving 200% and I just can't get any more out of the car. We just don't have the setup - there's not enough grip in the car. We'll just have to try to make the car better. We'll see what we can do in tomorrow morning's warm-up and then go for it in the race."

KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship - Provisional Qualifying

JEFF SHAFER, #24 PPI-DEREK DALY ACADEMY SWIFT-TOYOTA: (5th with a lap-time of 2:04.827 seconds at 116.74 mph)

"We had a lot of speed, but I messed up on some of my laps. Then after that, with the two black flags, we didn't have much of an opportunity. On my last run, when we could have improved, everybody was holding everybody up just trying to put a good lap i n.

"Hopefully tomorrow with the right conditions and a clear track, we can move up a couple of spots. I know the car has more speed. It's promising for me. I just need to pull it off."

MATT SIELSKY, #16 LCI INTERNATIONAL SWIFT-TOYOTA: (8th with a lap-time of 2:05.262 seconds at 116.33 mph)

"We thought that we'd have a bit more grip than we did. When we put on new tires, we didn't get the grip that we thought we would. So we went to a low downforce setup to try for a little more straight-line speed and made a shock change to try to keep th e grip in the corners. But the only chance we had to try it was the last lap and I nearly lost it going into Turn 1.

"So it looks like we've got some work to do. We'll try some small changes for tomorrow morning's qualifying session. We may have gotten a little bit lost in our setups this session. So we're going back to where we were when we were really fast and make small changes from there."

Barber Dodge Pro Series - Qualifying

ALEX GURNEY, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD-DODGE (Starting 10th with a lap-time of 2:16.212 seconds at 106.986 mph)

"I had a spin, a black flag for speeding in the pit lane and a car that had a lot of snap oversteer. Other than that everything went great. We think the oversteer problem might be with the shocks because we made a lot of changes to the car that should h ave cured the problem.

"There will be a big train drafting in the race. So passing will definitely be possible if we can get the car working better."
