Terry Dale Named Race Director for 2009 Atlantic Championship
BROWNSBURG, Ind. (February 13, 2009) - Veteran International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) official Terry Dale has been named race director for the 2009 Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, series officials announced today.
Dale, of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has been a race director for IMSA since 2005. He was race director for the IMSA Lites Series in both 2007 and 2008, and had the same role with the Porsche GT3 Cup Series in 2007. In 2005 and 2006, Dale was the race director for the IMSA-sanctioned Formula BMW USA Series.
"I'm excited to be working with the Atlantic Championship this season," Dale said. "The series has such a great and long history, and it is truly an honor to be associated with it. I'm looking forward to working with the drivers and teams this year in a positive way."
Dale has also been a chief steward for the SCCA Trans-Am Series, the CART-sanctioned Indy Lights Championship and Super Touring Championship, and various ASN Canada FIA-sanctioned series. He has been involved in racing as an official or competitor since 1963.
"We are extremely fortunate to have Terry come onboard as our 2009 race director," said Atlantic Championship Vice President of Operations John Brunner. "Terry brings a great deal of experience as a race official and is a consummate professional. He will ensure that our races will be officiated fairly and consistently, and we are grateful to IMSA for making him available to us this year."
The 12-race 2009 Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda gets underway at Sebring International Raceway on Friday, March 20 as part of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh From Florida weekend.
The Atlantic Championship is the longest-running open-wheel driver development series in North America and celebrated its 35th Anniversary season in 2008, with Finnish rookie Markus Niemela taking the series championship in the final race of the season. With a $1 million champion's prize and a total of $3 million in prize money up for grabs, the 2009 Atlantic Championship offers one of the most lucrative prize packages in North American open-wheel racing.
The series is noted for its long history of graduating its drivers into the top levels of motorsport throughout the world, including IndyCar drivers such as Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, Michael Andretti, Jimmy Vasser, Danica Patrick, Dan Wheldon, Graham Rahal and Raphael Matos, Formula One world champions such as Jacques Villeneuve and Keke Rosberg, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Sam Hornish Jr. and A.J. Allmendinger and sports car stars like Jon Fogarty, Alex Gurney, Michael Valiante, Joey Hand and Simon Pagenaud.
Atlantic Championship graduates have won races and championships at the highest levels of motorsport, including Formula 1, IndyCar and Champ Car, and sports cars. In 2009, Atlantic graduates will again be top competitors in the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series, the American Le Mans Series, the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and even the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series among many others.
