TOP FIVE IN TORONTO

Ryan Lewis came away from the weekend's Champ Car Atlantic race in Toronto with a fifth-place finish after racing in treacherous conditions on the streets of the Canadian city.

After being incredibly competitive throughout the practice sessions Ryan's qualifying time didn't reflect his performance; when the new rubber was bolted on for qualifying the balance of the car changed and the times were no longer there. He fought hard though and earned a starting slot just outside the top ten.

Ryan got a good start in the race but just two laps later the heavens opened and heavy rain began to fall. He dived into the pits for wet tyres but was scuppered when the red flag was thrown, putting Ryan at the back of the pack. The British driver was then left to fight his way through the field in difficult conditions, but he did it and crossed the line in fifth place after a monumental effort.

"We took a bit of a gamble at the start of the race," said Ryan. Obviously we weren't exactly at the position we wanted to be in qualifying and I managed to spin on slicks in the wet so we dropped back a couple of places. I thought they were going to restart the race in the wet and we could try to put on some wets and see if we could jump a few spots there, but it rained too hard and they red flagged it. I picked my way through the first couple of laps and passed a couple of people and then three or four cars. After that it was just chasing down Matos. We managed to get around the incident with Wickens in the end and probably would have finished fourth if he hadn't driven across the track in front of me, but I probably would have done the same. It was great for the team and a good result that reflects where we should have been all weekend."

Team Principal Derrick Walker added, "It was not a clear decision on whether it was going to go red flag or not, so we made the stop to change the tyres to wets for Ryan and then threw the red which put Ryan at a huge disadvantage at the back of the field. From that point on it was just using your head and driving a really smart race and when it's all said that's what Ryan did. He really deserved a podium finish, but in the wet anything can happen. He had a good solid race, but he deserved better."
