Red Bull Team Forsythe Starts on Sharp End of Grid in Toronto
TORONTO, Ontario -- In today's final qualifying for Sunday's Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto, Red Bull Junior Team standouts John Edwards and Robert Wickens nailed down top starting spots on the 1.755-mile 11-turn temporary circuit laid out around the grounds of Exhibition Place.
For Wickens (#3 Red Bull/INDECK Mazda-Cosworth/Cooper/Swift), it was a challenging day as the 18-year old Toronto high school student encountered grip and balance issues in the morning practice that saw him mired in the middle of the 23-car leaderboard. But careful analysis by the Forsythe Championship Racing engineers found a fundamental improvement to car setup that resulted in Wickens vaulting to the fourth row of the grid near the end of this afternoon's 35-minute qualifying session.
Edwards (#7 Red Bull/INDECK Mazda-Cosworth/Cooper/Swift), at 16 years of age the youngest driver in the Atlantic field, had his best qualifying session of the season since securing the fifth place spot on the grid for the Long Beach Grand Prix in April as the teenager from Little Rock, Arkansas waited until the final lap of the session to jump into the sixth place position for Sunday's race despite traffic woes.
John Edwards
"I was kind of upset when I got out of the car because (Franck) Perera ruined a couple of my best laps, but it didn't take long for me to start smiling. The team made some big improvements to the car this morning and the grip was a lot better on the concrete patches. That's where we seemed to have been losing a lot of time and it was a lot better this afternoon. We've had a bunch of problems in qualifying lately so it feels pretty good to finally see a decent result again. I've got a lot of work to do tomorrow to make it to the podium but it seems like we've found our pace again and should have a good race car!"
Robert Wickens
"Things were looking pretty bleak this morning when we just couldn't find the balance, but we looked at data from both cars and found some things that sent us off in a new direction. It made a big difference this afternoon because the car was much more hooked up, but we've still got a ways to go. It's going to be pretty exciting to start my first Atlantic race in front of the hometown fans, and I just want to thank everybody for all the support they're giving me. Toronto is definitely a racing town and it feels good to be here. Now I just need to move up in the race and see if I can pay back their support!"
The Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto Atlantic race gets underway at 10am local/ET, 14:00 UTC.
