TEAM KOOL GREEN'S ALEX GURNEY IS EIGHTH IN PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING
Grand Prix Player's de Trois-Rivieres Round 7 of the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship
TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec (July 30, 1999) - Alex Gurney's return visit to Canada for Team KOOL Green began with an eighth-place showing today in provisional qualifying for the Grand Prix Player's de Trois-Rivieres. Gurney powered his #27 Toyota-Swift around the 1.5207-mile temporary street circuit in 1:03.191 seconds at an average speed of 86.651 mph.
Alexandre Tagliani of Lachenaie, Que., led the Player's team by winning the provisional pole with a quick lap of 1:01.854 (88.524 mph). Anthony Lazzaro, the series' points leader from Acworth, Ga., was second fastest with a time 1:02.401 seconds (87.748 mph). Another Canadian, Kenny Wilden of Burlington, Ont., was third quick with a lap of 1:02.483 seconds (87.633 mph).
Gurney's first trip to Canada was for Round 5 of 12 in the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. He fought hard for a fifth-place finish on the famed street course, in what remains his best performance to date. The first-year driver from Newport Beach, Calif., is currently third in the battle for top rookie honors with 17 points, only 11 behind rookie leader Brazilian Nicolas Rondet. Gurney's point total is good enough for 12th overall.
KOOL/Toyota Atlantic competitors return to the track tomorrow for a 30-minute practice session at 9:25 a.m. Eastern Time. Qualifying is later in the afternoon at 1:00 p.m., while the 45-lap race is scheduled for Sunday at 1:45 p.m. ESPN2 will televise the race on Sunday, Aug, 8 at 12 p.m.
ALEX GURNEY, #27 Team KOOL Green Toyota/Swift: (8th with a lap-time of 1:03.191 seconds / 86.651 mph)
"It's a very difficult track to setup the car for because of all of the big bumps and crowns on the course. We're having a real difficult time with Turns 1 & 2 because it cambers in and then crowns on the exit. I think that 's where we're losing most of our time. It's a fun course all the same. There's a real wicked left-hander that's fun to go through. I was on one my faster laps towards the end of the session when I messed up in that corner. I had big slide and had the KOOL car horizontal on the track for a second or two. We're okay, it's just a matter of learning the course."
