Reid Takes Podium Position in Jerez Euro 3000 Race

NEW Zealand speedster Jonny Reid has scored his first podium finish in the 2004 Superfund Euro 3000 Championship at Jerez in Spain by taking third place in Sunday's third round of the series.

It was the young Aucklander's first point-scoring position of thew season after a seventh placing in the opening round at Brno and a retirement last weekend at Estoril in Portugal.

Reid was in sparkling form in the 34-lap, 150-kilometre event.

The John Village Automotive driver qualified seventh on the 4.429-kilometre circuit, just nine-tenths of a second off pole-sitter Norbert Seidler.

He dropped to eighth in the race's early stages but drove superbly to work his way back up the order. He chased Mathias Lauda (son of former F1 world champion Niki) and workhed his way through to fourth place by lap 23 and into third spot four laps later.

Reid raced in Australia last year, dominating the Holden Australian Drivers Championship for Formula 4000 machines on his way to second place in the series before moving to England at the beginning of 2004.

He had the added benefit on the weekend of having a team-mate in the shape of Brit Alex Lloyd for the Friday test session.

Lloyd, who was due to race in the British Formula 3 Championship this year but pulled out on the eve of its commencement, is highly-rated and looks likely to become Reid's team-mate for the remaining rounds of the series.

He didn't race at Jerez but was fast in testing, which is good news for Reid and JVA as having two fast drivers will help speed up the team to a level where it can regularly compete for race victories and pole positions.

The Superfund Euro 3000 Championship is held over 10 rounds and has produced current Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa (Sauber) and Gianmaria Bruni (Minardi).

It is a control formula with Lola chassis and Zytek engines and the winner will be awarded a Super Licence that enables a driver to be eligible to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Reid now sits seventh in the championship points.

Round four of the series will be held at Monza in Italy on June 27.
