Duncan Tappy on the Podium at Imola

Duncan claimed his first AutoGP podium at the weekend, promoting himself to joint-third in the Championship and helping DAMS to top the teams' table.

The practice sessions on Friday had shown promise and the pace continued into the qualifying session. Duncan finished his run on the first set of new tyres in second place. On the next set, however, the car handling changed subtly and he finished the session with a time that put him fourth on the grid for race one and the fastest DAMS driver.

Duncan got a great start in race one but immediately got boxed in and had to hold station. He held fourth place for the first stint before the pit stop, during which a problem with the right rear wheel nut cost him four seconds and two places. He rejoined in sixth but thanks to his pace a consistency, he still managed to recover fourth place by the chequered flag.

Race two was a far more dramatic affair, although Duncan managed to stay away from the worst of it. He got a good getaway while to his left and behind, a major pile-up engulfed over half the field. Following a red flag, the ten survivors restarted under the safety car with Duncan in third. Imola is notorious for its lack of overtaking opportunities and throughout the sprint race Duncan made numerous overtaking attempts on Miguez for second but the Spaniard made no mistake despite being visibly slower than the Brit. Duncan even had a last push over the line but was still two-hundredths of a second short.

Duncan: "It was a good weekend. We got decent points and I'm now up to third in the series standings, level with Filippi and just three points behind Tambay in second. I can't wait for Spa at the end of June. I'm getting more and more confident with the car and the team and it's great to be back on the podium so the next step is a win!"
