Marrakech, qualifying: Kevin Giovesi hands Eurotech the pole

Kevin Giovesi will be at his fourth front row start after Silverstone, Mugello and Brno in 2013.

Kevin Giovesi

It was Eurotech's Kevin Giovesi to cruise to pole at Marrakech, as he also scored his first two points of 2014 in the Auto GP Season opener. The Lombardy-based racer impressed at his first outing in Morocco, clocking the fastest laptime of Q2 in 1'28"873. Giovesi will be at his fourth front row start after Silverstone, Mugello and Brno in 2013. Giovesi also handed a great result to Eurotach, a team that is making its AutoGP debut. It's the first outright pole from a new team.

Ending up in second, at his first Auto GP race, was Super Nova's Markus Pommer, while the second row on the grid will be shared by the Zele Racing drivers Sergio Campana and Tamas Pal Kiss: the Italian put a last-gasp move to edge his Hungarian team-mate. Kimiya Sato (Euronova Racing) and Andrea Roda (Virtuosi UK) will share the third row. Roda rebounded from this morning's issues to top team-mates Richard Gonda and Sam Dejonghe. The top-10 was rounded out by Italian Michela Cerruti (Super Nova) and Michele La Rosa (MLR by Euronova).

The first drivers excluded from the shootout were Loris Spinelli, who ended up off-track for Eurotech, and the two Ibiza Racing Team drivers, Francesco Dracone and Giuseppe Cipriani. Race 1 will be taking-off on Saturday at 12:10 local time, followed by Race 2 at 14:10 on Sunday. Both races will be televised live by Eurosport, while a live timing service will be available at the official website of Auto GP.
