ALEX DAVISON WINS PRESTIGIOUS PORSCHE AWARD

After his stellar 2008, Australian race driver Alex Davison has won the Porsche Cup, awarded by Porsche to its most successful privateer sportscar competitor in the world.

First assigned in 1970, privateer Porsche racers competing internationally earn points based on their results and the strength of each series they race in.

Sportscar legends Bob Wollek, Klaus Ludwig and Bernd Schneider are among the past winners.

At the annual Porsche awards night in Weissach, Germany, last weekend, Davison was crowned the 2008 winner and received the keys to his prize, a new Porsche 911 Turbo.

The accolade comes after Davison's impressive year, which included time in the European Le Mans Series, American Le Mans Series and FIA GT Championship behind the wheel of Porsche's 911 GT3 RSR.

He ended the year with 6,430 Porsche Cup points, 400 clear of German Dirk Werner in second place.

"Winning the Porsche Cup is a great honour," Davison, the first Australian to win the prize, said.

"I didn't think I had done enough races to even get into the Top 10 on the points, so the final result came as a bit of a surprise.

"I've had a really good year in Europe, winning the Porsche Cup is a fantastic way to cap it all off."

Since relocating to Europe in March, Melbourne-born Davison raced in nine different countries, at 14 different circuits and in six different championships.

"When I went back to Europe at the start of the year, I was a bit of an unknown and I only had five confirmed races," he said.

"Along the way, though, I was able to get the results on the board, build up a good reputation among the teams and pick up more drives along the way.

"I'm really pleased with how the year turned out."

Davison, 29, finished second in the GT2 class in the European Le Mans Series, was second in class in the Sebring 12 Hour, contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans and won GT2 on debut in the FIA GT Championship, during his busy year.

Accompanying Davison's Porsche duties this season was a stellar performance behind the wheel of a V8 Supercar for Glenfords Racing at the coveted Bathurst 1000, as the driving ace made the dash home to Australia to compete at Mount Panorama in between two European races.

Davison partnered impressively with Glenfords' full time V8 Supercar driver Fabian Coulthard at Bathurst, the duo combining to run as high as third place in the closing stages of the race before fuel pick up problems resulted in two unscheduled pit stops.

His trip to Bathurst saw Davison compete in three different continents over three consecutive weekends, and his outstanding performance may well see him make a return to the V8 Supercar Championship as a full time driver in 2009.

An announcement regarding plans for 2009 is expected shortly.
