LOS ANGELES--A sponsorship from Terrible Herbst, Inc., the Las Vegas-based oil and gaming company, has augmented the significantly important radio communications element for next week's massive once-in-a-lifetime Tecate SCORE Baja 2000 presented by AutoZone, it was announced today by Los Angeles-based race producer SCORE International.
The Terrible Herbst sponsorship will allow SCORE to enhance its communications coverage operations for the world's longest and richest desert race by providing a fixed-wing, high-altitude radio communications aircraft to fly throughout the duration of the 1,726.97-mile race which runs the length of the Baja California, Mexico, peninsula. The historic race starts at 6 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 12.
"We are now able to insure complete, uninterrupted radio communications coverage for the length of the peninsula and SCORE is extremely grateful for this magnanimous sponsorship from Jerry Herbst and Terrible Herbst, Inc.," said Sal Fish, SCORE President and CEO. "We have talented, experienced personnel providing the race support for SCORE and this airplane puts the final pieces together in our communications puzzle. Logistically, to work with so many race teams and pit crews spread out for such a long distance requires the most expanded and detailed communications operation SCORE has ever put together. Terrible Herbst has put the icing on the cake to enable SCORE to provide the finest assistance possible to all of our participants and crews assisting their vehicles."
SCORE communications, with assistance from the Terrible Herbst-sponsored radio plane, will be directed by Bob Steinberger and his Weatherman Relay group, a division of P.C.I. Race Radios of Signal Hill, Calif., working to keep all SCORE officials and race teams linked together via radio.
Las Vegas-based Terrible Herbst Motorsports, has two high-profile entries in the race. Tim and Ed Herbst, 37 and 39 respectively, will co-drive the No. 1 Ford F-150 in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division. Troy Herbst, the youngest of the three Herbst brothers at 34, will co-drive the No. 100 Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car in Class 1 with NASCAR Winston Cup and Craftsman Truck Series owner Jim Smith. Both Herbst entries are the defending class champions in the Duralast SCORE Desert Series.
Through associate sponsorship from Globalstar and Qualcomm, SCORE personnel will also communicate with the help of nearly 40 satellite telephones.
SCORE Officials Association President Bill Wick will coordinate more than 150 SCORE checkpoint and roadcrossing personnel from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas. SCORE has over 300 total personnel working the event.
Under the supervision of SCORE Medical Director Dr. Dale Carrison, SCORE medical operations for the event will include two fully-equipped and staffed multi-engined aircraft from San Diego's Aeromedevac. Dr. Carrison, the head of the trauma center at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas and the medical director of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will oversee total medical operations from a helicopter. SCORE Rescue Director Jason Roeller and SCORE Medical Coordinator James Jacobs, both also from Las Vegas, will oversee 12 mobile medic teams who will work out of four-wheel drive vehicles spread the distance of the Baja peninsula.
