Bud Pole Award, Gatorade Front Runner Award, & Flowmaster Star Of The Race Award Again Add To Busch North Series Competition In 2001

Lee, N.H. (April 4, 2001) - In addition to battling for race victories and the lucrative series point fund, Busch North Series, NASCAR Touring competitors will again vie for special awards in the Bud Pole Award, Gatorade Front Runner Award, and Flowmaster Star of the Race Award programs during the 2001 season.

The 21-race Busch North Series schedule opens on Sunday, April 22 at Lee USA Speedway.in Lee, N.H. The series will visit 14 tracks in seven states during the 2001 campaign, including four appearances with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.

The Bud Pole Award for the fastest qualifying speed in time trials, sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, Inc., is the longest-standing special awards program in NASCAR and has grown to cover all the NASCAR Touring Series as well as the Winston Cup, Busch Series, Grand National Division, and Craftsman Truck Series. Each individual Bud Pole winner earns $750, while the driver winning the most Bud Poles during the season receives a check for $10,000 at the Busch North Series Banquet. The 2000 Bud Pole Award champion, Tracy Gordon, won five poles during the season, edging out career Bud Pole leader Kelly Moore for the honor.

Because the leading qualifiers redraw for their starting spots in short-track Busch North Series races, the Bud Pole winner does not always start from the number one position. One of Gordon's winning performances after taking the Bud Pole in 2000 actually began from the seventh spot in the field.

The Gatorade Front Runner Award, sponsored by Gatorade, the Official Thirst Quencher of NASCAR rewards drivers for leading laps in Busch North Series competition. In 2000, series champion Brad Leighton and runner-up Dale Shaw tied on points for the Gatorade Front Runner Award, but Leighton took the honors on the tiebreaker of higher finish in the overall Busch North Series standings. The Gatorade Front Runner Award for each race is worth $750, while the season award winner receives $7,500.

The Flowmaster Star of the Race Award is sponsored by Flowmaster, Inc., who supply the mufflers required on Busch North Series cars at many speedways. The Flowmaster program rewards the driver who advances the most from start to finish of each Busch North Series race, and the driver with the highest point total at the end of the season receives the $7,500 award. Mike Olsen carried off the Flowmaster Award for the 2000 season.

In addition to the Bud Pole, Gatorade Front Runner, and Flowmaster Star of the Race programs, registered rookies in the Busch North Series compete for the Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Race and Rookie-of-the-Year Awards. Each Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Race receives $1,000, while the Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Year earns $5,000.

The Busch North Series is one of nine NASCAR Touring series which blanket the USA, bringing special events to NASCAR Weekly Racing Series tracks as well as many superspeedways and road courses. The NASCAR Touring program is widely recognized as the premier training ground for drivers and mechanics aspiring to the Winston Cup Series, Busch Series, Grand National Division, and Craftsman Truck Series, while also offering career opportunities to professional racers at the regional level. Busch North Series graduates currently active in the Winston Cup Series include drivers Steve Park and Ricky Craven ,and crew chiefs Greg Zipadelli and Frank Stoddard. Corporations making major contributions to NASCAR Touring point funds include Anheuser-Busch, Inc., Featherlite Trailers, Goody's Headache Powders, Gatorade, RE/MAX International, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Raybestos Brakes, and R.J. Reynolds' Winston brand.
