INDIANAPOLIS, April 17 -- "Tickets are now on sale for one of the biggest social events surrounding the Indianapolis 500: the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation's Benefit at the Indianapolis branch of Morton's of Chicago, the Steakhouse, on Sunday, May 6 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy Racing League are the gala's title sponsors.

That night a virtual who's who of Indy Racing drivers and other celebrities will be on hand at Morton's, located on the corner of Washington and Pennsylvania Streets in downtown Indianapolis, to raise money for paralysis research and treatment.

The red-carpet event features gourmet food prepared by Morton's master chefs and presented in a lavish strolling buffet, a silent auction of one-of-a-kind memorabilia and the chance to mingle with virtually all of the drivers expected to start this year's Indy 500 on May 27. ABC's Jack Arute will be the emcee.

The proceeds go to The Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 foundation formed by Sam Schmidt, a former Indy Racing driver who now owns the Indy car driven by Davey Hamilton. One of the most popular personalities in the Indy Racing Northern Light Series, Schmidt is recovering from serious upper spinal injuries suffered in an Indy car crash on Jan. 6, 2000. The foundation's mission is to help individuals overcome spinal cord injuries and other dehabilitating illnesses by facilitating scientific research, medical treatment, rehabilitation and advances in medical technology.

The event is being hosted by Treadway-Hubbard Racing and one of its drivers, two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk. Raymond James & Associates is the presenting sponsor. Contributing sponsors include The Hubbard Foundation, Sprint PCS, Ilmor Engineering, BG Products and Jim Freudenberg of Kelley Racing.

Other corporations, businesses or individuals wishing to sponsor the event are asked to contact Scott Cronk of Treadway-Hubbard Racing at (317) 387-0888 for more information.

The event is always a sell-out, so early ticket purchases are encouraged. The ticket price, a reflection of Schmidt's car number, is $99.

To order tickets, contact Linda Mansfield at the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, (317) 236-9999, or at Restart Communications at (317) 639-0729. She can also be reached by e-mail at LindaKMansfield@cs.com. After placing the order, tickets can be purchased by VISA, MasterCard or by mailing a check made out to the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and sending it to Mansfield's attention at the foundation, 411 Dorman St., Indianapolis, Ind. 46202-3647. Donations can also be made to the foundation in this way anytime.
