NJCM Position Statement on New Jersey Motor Speedway Project

Since the Atlantic County Mayors Association voted unanimously on June 26, 1992 to support the development of a World Class Motorsports facility in the Atlantic City region, the New Jersey Conference of Mayors (NJCM) has diligently lobbied state government to recognize the tremendous economic benefit to New Jersey as a whole.

In January of 1997, Mr. O. Bruton Smith of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. toured the Atlantic City region and later in 1997, Mr. Smith toured the Cumberland County site. In 1998, the administration supported Cumberland County officials in their efforts to encourage Mr. Bruton Smith to build a facility in Cumberland County.

We have consistently supported the development of a facility in the South Jersey region where there is adequate open space and ample opportunity to improve the infrastructure in a responsible fashion to the benefit of all New Jersey.

A bright future for the economy of New Jersey is directly linked to the significant economic impact that a World-Class Motorsports facility would bring to this great state, while at the same time enabling the region to maintain its rural character.

An overwhelming majority of New Jersey elected officials and business leaders from north to south have supported our 7-year effort and they have publicly joined in bipartisan fashion to support and encourage the Whitman Administration to focus its interest on the Southern New Jersey region where the checkered flag awaits New Jerseyans to reap the significant economic impact.

It remains our deep belief that all involved will come to realize that the tourism-rich Atlantic/Cumberland/Salem /Cape May Counties are in fact the "New York Market" that is so coveted by the top organizations in American Motorsports today.

One needs only to study the daily flow of tourists that enter the Southern Jersey region, and one will soon appreciate the value to the entire metro region and the central nature of the Southern New Jersey region to the Metro-Market.

Placing New Jersey on the international map by headquartering the greatest Motorsports Facility in the world in Southern New Jersey is an NJCM priority. We recognize the tremendous value of this project to all of New Jersey.

Let us join Assembly Speaker Jack Collins, Senate President Donald DiFrancesco, and the Cumberland County officials in this bipartisan effort to convince the leaders of Motorsports that New Jersey, namely its Southern region is the most realistic and beneficial location to all concerned to begin construction of the "New Jersey Motor Speedway."

"If Government is going to be involved in the development of a Motorsports Facility in New Jersey, then Southern New Jersey will hold its own. I am unabashedly a supporter of a track in Southern New Jersey."

Jack Collins, Speaker, New Jersey State Assembly

"Millville has the space and the need for a Motorsports facility. It's an inappropriate use of the Meadowlands. I don't believe it would benefit that area. I probably will not support proposals to build a new speedway in the Meadowlands."

Donald DiFrancesco, President, New Jersey State Senate
