John Force, Parnelli Jones, Rick Mears, Wally Parks and Les Richter have been nominated for the second annual Eagle One-Shav Glick Award, presented by the appearance care products company for distinguished achievement in motor racing by a Californian.
The award, which honors the esteemed motor sports writer of the Los Angeles Times, will be presented at the NASCAR NAPA Auto Parts 500, at California Speedway on April 29, 2001.
Force is a ten-time NHRA Funny Car drag racing champion and was Motor Racing Driver of the Year in 1996. Jones won the Indy 500 in 1963 and was co-owner of cars that won the 1970 and 1971 Indy 500. Parks founded the National Hot Rod Association and is a member of the Automotive Hall of Fame. Mears is a four-time winner of the Indy 500 and three-time CART national champion. Richter was president and overseer of Riverside International Raceway for 23 years and a leading force in the building of California Speedway.
The judges are: Mike Harris, Associated Press; Bill Center, San Diego Union; Jim Short, Riverside Press-Enterprise; Doug Stokes, Irwindale Speedway; Mary Ellen-Wright Rana, Laguna Seca Raceway; John Zimmermann, Racer magazine; and Dan Gurney, this year's award winner.
Shav Glick is the motorsports writer for the Los Angeles Time and one of the most repected and honored journalists in his field. He is also a proud California native, thus part of the Genesis of this annual award presented by Eagle One in Shav's name honoring Californians in Motorsports.
"What an honor it is for me to serve on this panel of judges. And, wow what a tough job to choose only one of these five titans of motorsports as the 'winner' of this award named in Shav's honor. They (and Shav as well) represent the very best in their chosen fields. It's a mind-boggling assignment, one that I had no idea would be even twice as tough this second year," stated Stokes
