South Okanagan’s Area 27 circuit Open House and Track Tour

British Columbia’s South Okanagan Area 27 new road course is currently under construction and earlier this month, more than 200 people walked the 4.83-kilometer racetrack-to-be.

Area 27 is being built following modern racetrack guidelines, features like large run-off zones, gravel traps and tire walls combine to promote a safe track day environment. Enthusiasts can comfortably explore the limits of even the most exotic performance machine.

While most of the track is gravel finished and the rest gravel-ready, the final vision of this challenging classic road circuit is clear: 16 corners, significant elevation changes, and the opportunity to challenge and improve drivers’ skills in one of the most beautiful natural settings around.

Led by 1995 Indy 500 winner and 1997 F1 World Champion, Jacques Villeneuve, former GM series competitors Trevor Seibert [track builder], Bill Drossos, and Richard Spénard, the group of enthusiasts walked the track, stopping at each corner and listening as the pros talked design and details.

What was a cornfield last year is now a gravel circuit with actual elevation and all 16 corners dialed in. For the technical-loving enthusiasts it was an opportunity to learn numbers and angles – for those itching to put rubber on asphalt, it was a reminder that we’re this close.

“It’s impressive. I’m not a video guy, so I haven’t done a virtual drive before getting to the site. I’m glad – it made this day a discovery of what will be one of the nicest tracks and challenging circuits in North America. I was blown away,” said driver coach, Richard Spenard.

The track will soon be paved and the first hot laps are scheduled to take place in September.
