Chris Green makes the most of a tough situation by picking up points in Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE--Chris Green was primed for a podium finish at today's Milwaukee Mile Centennial 250 Presented by Miller Lite in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A series of unexpected challenges marred the way to victory for Chris and the #96 Barber Dodge Reynard. He finished 11th.

The actual race was hampered by an unfortunate incident at the start when a competitor's engine died and Green was lucky to avoid a serious collision, however he lost several places as a consequence.

The race got off to a hectic start when a first lap, first turn melee took out Mike Richardson and Steve Welk.

Green fought some handling problem as well as the other competitors valiantly for the remainder of the 60-laps race dropping as low as 18th place, but as the race strategies played out and Green continued to drive a determined race he eventually worked his way back up to 11th place where he finished.

A small consolation was that he had set the fastest lap of the race at 126.786 mph (203.998 km/h) - 29.303 seconds.

Chris take on the incident: "I know people hear that a lot, but really, that was just a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. There was nothing I could do."

"Right before the green flag. I guess the 16-car had engine problems or something, I don't know but it came down right in front of me and I just got into the back of him. It caused damage to the car, but luckily, it was mostly superficial," said Green after the race.

"I'm a bit disappointed because without the episode at the start I could have been in the top-5 in the first corner, a position that I would have kept easily," Green said.

"Our team did a great job to make the car quick--we set fastest race lap. However, in the first 50 laps, it was very difficult to get into the corners late and come out good. Also, when I was behind another car I just had a terrible time. The turbulence of the car in front of me would take all of the downforce off the Reynard Dodge and make it tough to get around a corner," concluded Green.

"It was a very tough day at the office for Chris Green Motorsports," said Team Principle Ron Green. "It's unfortunate that circumstances didn't allow us to take this fast car to victory lane. The weekend started very well when Chris placed 2nd and 4th in early practice sessions. Chris has proved to be fast and amongst the best drivers of the series. "

This race was also the 19-year-old Canadian's first time ever driving on an oval.

"It's been really, really interesting," Green said. "It's a bit scary when you start because you don't know the limits of the driver and the car on this kind of track, and it's very difficult to estimate this."

"After a couple of runs, you can start to get some sensations and a better feeling, so you start to push a bit more, but always with a lot of precaution because it's really easy to do a mistake. I now have the greatest respect for the IRL/CART drivers."

It was the third consecutive performance in the championship points for Chris. He now stands 7th in the Barber Dodge Pro Championship standings with 20 points.

Leonardo Maia won today's race followed by Victor Gonzalez and Memo Rojas.

The next stop on the 10-race Barber Dodge Pro Championship Series 2003 tour is round four in two weeks (June 15-17), the Grand Prix of Monterey, at the Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca, California.
